First try using a new Solar filter for my lens that was a birthday present on my Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS lens and the a7Riv , cropped a bit .
Shown my friends son, Anthony, his first view of the Sun as well and were greeted by a good display of sunspots . He was worried about burning he's eyes out ( a sensible lad !) but I explained the solar filter to him , and the difference between OVF and EVF cameras . He's still learning at 12 year old . The view could have been better , but the Sun was already getting low in the sky and the clouds had started to form This was taken threw light cloud , a few minutes later and the Sun was obscured . Better luck in the summer ! Sun Spots a plenty ! by Neil , on Flickr |

Great stuff, Neil. I wonder if I can find a sun filter for my longest lens, the 500 Reflex ...

Easily . I used to use one that slips over the end of a telescope , but that type are very bulky . This one is a screw in filter that you can keep in your camera bag of with a few others . I got the 77mm one as I have other lenses that I want to use it on of that size . With the 200-600 I just use a step down rings . You don't need to worry about vignetting because you'll crop away more than half the frame anyway . eBay link to the one I got. Other sizes available. Starvue Solar filter You'll need to unscrew the short hood off the reflex to put this on . It's a type of foil that is very delicate , as fragile as tin foil . That's why I got it small enough so I can still mount the lens hood . Nothing to do with flair , just so you can protect the filter .The filter also has a forward facing thread so you can put the hood back on with the reflex . I've ordered up a step down rings to mount the filter on my Minolta 500mm Reflex , when I get it , if the Sun shows itself while I'm on a day off , I'll take a sample shot and post it here and a full size one on Flickr so you can see if you want to get one without buying one first . IIRC the Reflex lens does a decent job of shots of the moon , so should be fine with shots of the sun . |
