The adapters arrived today in UK so that's 27 days after order placed.

Bad enough but I but there's a problem or I can't understand simple instructions.

Camera - A700, Adapter MD-L4 (len's data: 24/f2.8, 35/f1.8, 50/f1.4, 60/f1.1).

Power off A700, mount the adapter and MF Lens - result, A700 "chirps" and display shows no lens attached.
If I leave the A700 powered on, unmount and then remount lens - adapter is at 24mm (P1)
Power Off/On, single press - no change still at 24mm (P1)
Power Off/On,    two press - no change still at 24mm (P1)
Leave the A700 powered on, unmount/remount lens - adapter is now at 60mm (P4)
Power Off/On, single press - no change still at 60mm (P4)
Leave the A700 powered on, unmount/remount lens - adapter is still at 60mm (P4)

If I repeat the process
Power off a700, mount the adapter and MF Lens - result, A700 "chirps" and display shows no lens attached.
leave the A700 powered on, unmount/remount lens, single press - adapter is at 24mm (P1). I thought this may give me 35mm (P2) but no it's P1.
Leave the A700 switched on, unmount/remount lens - adapter is now at 24mm (P1)
Power Off/On, single press - no change still at 24mm (P1)

What am I doing wrong, if anything?

OK, we can forget the last post.
Although there was no explanation in the delivery, it appears that the lens data order is not what I asked for.
It is now 60/f1.1, 24/f2.8, 35/f1.8, 50/f1.4 - Apparently the largest aperture has to be first.
This is not a problem if you know what's going on and now the changing data makes sense.

I find that the A700 needs to be powered on when you install the adapter and lens. If not the A700 simply "chirps" until you execute an Unmount/Mount of the adapter with the power on.

Having done that if you look at the LCD screen and use the "eye-start" function instead of the "half press" shutter, you can see the aperture change on the top line of the LCD. The half press works as well but you don't accidentally trigger the shutter.

So, panic over and now I can't wait to try it out in the field.

Hi all. I've been using my adapter on my A900 for a week now and I definately have a problem. Hoping someone can shed some light.

I've followed the instructions for mounting (camera off, switch to MF, mount lens, turn on) The problem is that the camera just keeps trying to initialize the AF motor, clicking away and won't stop. If I unmount and remount the lens a few times, it eventually goes away and I can use the adapter normally, but it never gives AF confirmation. I've tried in Av and M mode with the same result.

Do I have a bad copy?

Secondly, I do have to say thanks for making these available though, I understand that if it works, it will be very helpful. I hope you'll consider to make some for Exakta - A someday.

Kelly.

I use it with my A200 without issue, however, must put switch to manual. The shutter button must be held half way down for focus confirm to work.

Are you sure the noise is from the AF system? My A700 does not start the AF system when in Manual AF, don't see why the A900 should be any different.

The a700 has to be powered on when you mount the adapter otherwise it just "chirps" and there is a flashing line on the LCD where the f-number is displayed when the lens is recognised.

I use mine in A mode and the Focus confirm works whether the shutter button is half pressed or not.

BTW I've just been trying out my MD Macro lens and it works a treat.

Ok, I've tried mounting with the camera on and off. Its the same result as before, and no chirp from this A900. Just the motor screw grinding over and over - tick, tick, tick. If I mount an autofocus lens on the body - even in MF mode - it will initialize the AF screw and wind the lens back to infinity, so this reaction in MF mode is normal, for the A900 at least.

The adapter will work if I let the camera do this process of initializing helplessly once, but then I must unmount and remount the adapter while leaving the camera on each time. Then it functions normally.

Also, I noted that focus confirm dot does light up, but no beep (this is the same behavior if I use an AF lens manually, though using AF for an AF lens does trigger the beep). I have to say that overall though, I don't find the dot helpful, it has a wider tolerance for focus than my eyes, so I don't trust the dot to my own instict with the A900 viewfinder, but thats another story :) As long as the SR is working properly is my main concern.

OK. You can hear the A700 engage the AF but doesn't seem to wind and certainly no useless winding with the Adapter.
There is no "beep" on mine, just the dot.

Are there any other A900 users with this adapter? Does it do the same for you?

I have found a solution I can live with - turn on the camera before mounting the adapter, then it works on the first try.

Not sure if you are reading this still James, perhaps it is worth a mention on the instructions page if all A900s perform in this way. I really thought something was faulty at first. And thanks again for making this!

Regards,

Kelly.

Hi Kelly,
Thank you for providing a detailed approach to using the experience and treatment. I think you are right. For some new SONY DSLR, such as a700 upgrade with new firmware,a900. Should power on the body first, and mount the adapter later. Then it will work well.
So please give us more experience and other useful tips.

Thanks.

I originally had the Haoda 4 Focal Length adapter for use with the A100.   It worked well but, as noted elsewhwere, the multi FL adapters can be a bit finicky to use.   When I purchased my A700 I found the same "chirping" problem.    As far as I recall mounting the adapter while powered on didn't work to resolve the issue.

I finally ordered several of James' single FL adapters, programmed with the aperture and FL for each lens.   This is a more expensive approach but well worth the extra cost.   I currently have the adapters on a 135/2.5, 200/4.0, and 400/5.6. It makes using each lens almost as natural as working with the standard A mount lenses.   I highly recommend them.    I'll likely be ordering a few more soon to go with my shorter lenses.

I have both the Haoda 4 focal length adapter and two James Lao 4 focal length adapters. The Haoda adapter has a problem where the adapter must be mounted with the camera (A100) turned off, otherwise it keeps chirping forever. This is very annoying if one accidentally presses the lens release and thereby puts the adapter into “chirping mode”. Both James Lao adapters can be mounted with the camera on or off, no chirping.

Thanks for the explanation Arkku.   I was pretty sure that was the behaviour I'd experienced.   After using the single FL adapters I haven't been tempted to tinker with the 4 FL since.

Hi James, thanks for the confirmation on that. Is it possible to request an Exakta/Topcon to A-mount chipped adapter? I think it could be a strong product since Canon is the only other DSLR brand out there that can currently use the lenses at infinity.
