Yes, I'm rather taken with public art sculptures, and Gorinchem is well provided with these.
hs19 ![]() sculptures /1 I never found out what this one is about, but it appears to introduce visitors to the ferry port area, and it is quite small. hs20 ![]() sculptures /2 These two have hard-to-read inscriptions in Korean and English (and perhaps Dutch on another side) and, if my memory serves me right, are a gift from the Korean city that welcomed our friend Hendrick at the top of this thread. These two deities are designed to protect the harbour of Gorinchem. hs21 ![]() Shapes These shapes date I think from 50 or more years ago and sit so naturally on a bank near the Lingehaven. hs22 ![]() Lingehaven The Lingehaven itself is a lovely site, here seen looking towards the town. (Two frames stitched, I hadn't figured out why my 24 mm lens wasn't delivering ultrawide views.) hs23 ![]() De Zalmvisser Harm photographed me standing by this engaging statue that marks either a lost way of making a living or perhaps a folkloric tale. I'm not sure which. hs24 ![]() Windmill I always like a good windmill and this one was splendid against the Gorkums sky. |

Your sculptures in hs21 date from 1974, the outside art exhibition called Symposion.

I'll finish my contributions with some views from and near the city's fortifications, part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie (New Dutch Waterline).
hs25 ![]() River and city This view towards the Dalempoort and windmill (mostly obscured by the trees) shows the Merwede on the right and the waterways by the fortress walls. hs26 ![]() Outside the city defences Further round and to the northeast of the old centre the fortifications and water defences appear to have a more tranquil purpose these days. hs27 ![]() Dalempoort with windmill A better view of the old city gate and nearby windmill. The gate leads to a tranquil green and water space, ideal for contemplative walks, I imagine, hs28 ![]() This moment doesn't exist without you Thanks, Harm, for being an excellent guide - I enjoyed the visit and the revelations of this interesting old town. Let's do it again some time! |

A fine armchair tour of this lesser known town with its interesting history and heritage as well as more modern attractions.
Thanks for sharing. |

So, my last shots of the day. I didn't shoot as much as Howard did, but I blame it to Gorinchem being my daily place.

Harm, in your pictures with blue sky I notice a nasty ugly spot, I think you have dust (or based on the shape, some sort of hair I think) on the camera sensor.

![]() Thanks, I replaced the pictures with cleaned versions. Strangely, both cameras that I used that day, had a similir spot. Edited by Harm vb - 19 June 2022 at 20:32 |
