Last Monday Fred (Fred_S) and Domien(dopol) tried to photograph some maddow birds.
We weren't particularly successful, but a mini-mini-birding-DM is a mini-mini-birding-DM

Of course, we start with the obligatory group shot (though taking it on location failed)

Then the shot that sums it all up

Thanks for kicking off and the noce meeting Domien! For me, it was a nice day out after a being 'grounded' for a while

As Domien said, the harvest was a bit poor, and the weather was a mixed bag.

However, starlings were well represented, allowing for some (group)portraits and 'action' shots.

Some nice shots here.
As I still own a 70-400G but don't have an A-mount camera anymore I wonder about the focus tracking combined with the LA-EA5, is it fast?

"Fast" is relative Peter .
The last shot ws fairly 'point and shoot' when the kestrel passed by, so that's not bad I think.
I haven't had the pleasure to compare it with comparable native E-mount telezooms, but for my kind of shooting I am fairly happy for now.
It picks up bird's eyes too.

Yep, it is relative. The last shot is certainly good.
Reason for asking is that I also own the FE100-400GM and I am very impressed with that one but for birds more reach is to be desired, like the 200-600 and I can't justify the costs of owning all 3.
I am not that impressed with the 70400G combined with the LA-EA4, I own.

I’e got the same lens and considerationa. I bought the 1,4X converter . Works fine Little to no degradation that I can see.
Have tried the 2X converter, Is ok, with some degradation , especially vignetting in the corners

I can't judge fpr ypu. I can confirm that the LA-EA5 works better than the LA-EA4.
However, if you are really into birding, the 200-600 may make more sense.
Personally I like the more versatile shorter focal lengh.

That's quite a "Hero" shot for FS09 Fred. The sky looks like a film set backdrop.

Thanks Lee! Hadn't thought of it like that, but in this digital era, you never know with backdrops
