...one more thought: at least some of this era lenses (not certain if all?) have a mechanism to detect minimum focus, I had this fail in a kit zoom and it would slam minimum focus *hard* when seeking a close subject, or when the camera was turned off.

Could be linked?

Just had another thought that points to chip errors, since a TC with a functional chip is seen as "the lens" by the camera, this may explain function with TC, and problems without?
