Thanks for the compliments, guys. I was pleasantly surprised to see my image selected as POTW. Such an honor.
Paul: I like the first image best, but all are good. I hope you enjoy using that Vectis mirror. I'm in love with mine, except for the pesky vignetting. I have not yet worked up the courage to modify the rear baffle. I know that light can be scarce in your region of the world, with some of your neighboring countries spending great spans of relative darkness. No such issues here, so mirror lenses are useable year-round. I wish I could spend more time in the forums, and I will when I figure out how to retire. In the meantime, I allow myself Sunday afternoons to enjoy photography. Here's another 8/400 Vectis image taken from a distance and cropped significantly, then enlarged and sharpened a tad using Topaz. I had taken this to count the ducklings later after uploading my images; there were 16. Every year we see a proud yet nervous mother duck leading her offspring through the treacherous waters. I always count and wonder how many will remain the following week. A week later, there were eight. Ooops, sorry, I just noticed that I had already posted the duck image. Deleting this one now. Please apply my story to the previous posting. Edited by woodrim - 10 April 2023 at 15:53 |

I have a new (old) mirror lens. After a fellow mirror enthusiast suggested the Canon 8/500, I found one at an excellent price and couldn't resist, even though I already have ## 8/500 mirrors (don't know the number offhand). I have been pleasantly surprised at how sharp it is.
We're in the birds mating season now and throughout the rest of the month. There is a rookery only minutes from my home, so I have been able to visit on week evenings. All from Canon 8/500 and A7 II. 1 2 3 |

Thank you, Simon. The rookery is nearby, so I go when the sun is low. The difference between shooting the birds in the trees and the branches near the water is remarkable. I love when the birds perch in that area. I shoot through the weeds, creating front bokeh, which I love.

Too late for last year's Day Prime, too early for this year's The doubler makes the donuts irregular "Conventional" pictures are pretty blah, obviously I didn't intend it to be this much of an experiment, but I left without a tripod or monopod, so all handheld, no stabilization (frowny face).... Yes, its not photo, but video...anyhow...from around 2.40 minutes to 5.30 it is shot using the Minolta AF500f8
https://vimeo.com/170270566 Who thought it could be used as a video lens ? (yea, yea.....not using a fluid-head gives jagged panning shots...) |

I decided not to buy anymore gear this year , but to sell off unused gear instead .
I've too much stuff cluttering the place up that's not been used for years . Well , so much for that one ! I've often eyed up the Minolta 250mm Reflex lens , but typically selling for close to £1000 , I've never bothered , especially as I have such as the Minolta 200mm f/2.8 , which is a fairly small , light lens . Though clearly not as small and light as the reflex . Then at Christmas , one came up for £500 . I resisted buying it , a week later , it was still on my watch list , and I gave in and bought it ! And I'm glad I did . Here's a few from it . Minolta RF Rokkor 250mm f5.6 Reflex Lens on a Sony a7Riv . Ducks by Neil , on Flickr Hunting squirrels by Neil , on Flickr How many can you see ? A shot taken with the Minolta RF Rokkor 250mm f5.6 Reflex and Sony a7Riv on the way back from Glossop .
Hand held shots at night , with the advantage of the cameras image stabilisation and good high ISO . A view between the hills of Manchester City centre ( or maybe Hyde ?!) from Charlesworth . The green space at a closer distance is probably Werneth Low , which is a parkland on top of a hill. Manchester by Neil , on Flickr |
