What? You sold your AF Reflex? Do you have a better mirror? |

At that time I felt it didn't suit me well.
I was never happy with the results. I don't have a better one now, just two manual versions (Samyang 300mm and Rokkor 500mm). |

Fred: I have the LA-EA4 adapter but have not been pleased with the consistency of focus, so most times I manually focus it. I don't expect Sony to ever support my camera with the EA5. I think I would use it more if I did the Monster conversion to the adapter. Until then, there are three others I will pick up first when manual focusing. But the Vectis 400 gets the most use. |

I bought the LA-EA5 without reading the camera compatibility restrictions and found out the hard way only the latest cameras are supported (why not some firmware updates to fix this?). Alas, I took the hit and got an A7Riv. Not fond of the 61 MP 15 bit file size, but the sensor is seriously good and AF on the 500mm Minolta CAT is very convenient. I found MF is very difficult on the 500mm CAT if you are not on tripod (the image just keeps moving too much) but on the 250mm CAT it is OK. Eagerly awaiting my Vectis AF adapter so I can finally get the 400mm CAT to work.

I did a review of the 500AF compared with a Vivitar 500 (same lens as the Samyang 500 I think): https://www.35mmc.com/26/10/2021/minolta-af-reflex-500-review/
I use the 500AF for aircraft quite a bit, both with the A99 and with an A7ii/La-EA4 combo. On either setup there is only one focus point, do you still only get one with the LA-EA5 or does PDAF off the sensor give more flexibility? |

Paul: Manual focusing can be very challenging. I'm pretty comfortable with it either handheld or with a monopod, but it does take a steady hand and holding of breath. I concluded the 800mm needs the monopod at a minimum. That said, my age is kicking in and I've developed some shake to my hands. My handheld days may be numbered. I did read the EA5 fine print and was disappointed that my camera wasn't supported. However, the Monster people have been doing a good job with their EA4 conversion, so I may go that route. I think you'll love the Vectis if you aren't too bothered by the vignetting. |

I do know that the MonsterAdapter EA4 conversion allows a wider AF area, but I cannot give any more details. |

Very good use of that Rokkor. Sharp. I like #3, it reminds me of the ironwork here in Charleston.

I've been using 16 mm film lenses quite a bit. As they have been developed for a 13 mm image circle, they bring a whole new meaning to the word vignetting. I can deal with that. |

Bob, the A7Riv does not allow me to adjust focus area. On the 500AF, the camera uses several AF points, but they are all located in the center. So, more than one, but not what you are looking for. But perhaps it is just not possible with CATs. |

There's a third party kit available to alter the LA-EA4 to work without the mirror , from just before Sony released the LA-EA5. When the reflex lens is used it allows you to select the focus point as you wish . I've also got the a7Riv and LA-EA5, along with my old LA-EA4 , and I've been considering getting the chip to allow mine to work like this . LA-EA4r Monster adapter chip |
