I grabbed the 500mm mirror lens for the last Blood Moon. Until the moon was almost completely eclipsed; I was able to shoot hand held. I then used a monopod.

Thanks - I do have the LA-VE1 adapter but alas no Vectis 400 mm mirror lens   

Nevertheless I have the Minolta 500 AF Reflex, and here are some samples - most with doughnuts!

Celestron C90 spotting scope / Sony A700
A 1000 mm mirror lens that was the ultimate hard to focus combo! I had forgotten about it until this thread was created. I need to dig it out and try it on a body with focus peaking. It also means that I have waaaay too much gear if I have things like this that I have forgotten about.

And so it seems I will in the near future have three mirror lenses to play with, a Rokkor 250, a Rokkor 500 and a Vectis 400 (a DIY project as I have no Monster adapter but plenty of helicoids).

Have you just found a Vectis? Good for you. If you saw my post regarding my own experience, the helicoid approach did not work well. To get it to work at all, I had to use a Vectis camera to focus the lens at the approximate range I wanted to use it, remove the lens without turning off the camera, so it didn't reset to infinity, and then I could use the helicoid in a very narrow range.

Whatever you do, don't modify the lens; a MonsterAdapter will be available again in the near future. I know this from direct information.

What do you think of the Rubinar 300/4.5 Mike?
I like it because it's fast and sharp.

I just realised I have another Reflex mirror lens, the Sirius 500mm F8.8 for, I think, the SR mount. Not a lens I'd recommend.

I think it's expensive. It's one of the very few mirrors I'd still like to try. Other than having seen good results from it, I can only repeat what I've read from others. I've read that it can be difficult to focus but I think that was mostly due to using on a DSLR. Mirrorless have made focusing so much easier and thus have improved the mirror lens experience.

I have a couple of good f/5.6 300mm but they are not at the same level as yours. The MTO 3M-7K also seems a very good 5.6/300mm. There is an Aussie in the facebook mirror group that uses one to good effect.

I'd like to see more from your Rubinar.

Basil: That is an impressive result from such a long mirror, not to mention a Celestron. Has that photo had some sharpening?

Thanks for the info Mike. Yes, I found one and was thinking to Frankenstein something but it did come to mind that on a 400 mm lens the helicoid would need to be long and that I would have no control over the actual distance the lens would be focussed at to begin with, making the whole endeavor uncertain. Do you know where the monster adapter will become available?

Funny, the Monster adapter is likely to be more expensive than the lens.

Mike, thanks.
It has some sharpening applied, but more of a boost in contrast. To me, one of the weaknesses of mirror lenses is a lack of contrast. Boosting it in post really makes the images come alive. On my 500 reflex, I have added a screw on lens hood like this to help increase the contrast.

That shot was one of about 50 I took that day with that combo. It was the only one worth trying to work with. I need to go out again with a body that has focus peaking. That should improve my hit ratio. Now that I'm retired, I will have more time to spend with more challenging lenses to shoot with. The past 2 years have been all about just trying to nail the shot within a very limited time frame to be out. This thread is reminding me of the joys of the mirror bug.

If that is true, you got the lens for a great price. I found mine in Ireland at $125 plus shipping to the US. Most are above $200 on eBay. Did you mean to ask where or when? I can't say when; I was first told October but that is behind us now. I expect cost to be around $200. I have purchased some other Vectis lenses because they're so cheap, even though I don't really do zooms. I have been feeding performance data back to the developer, so that is why I have some information. Be patient and be sure to buy one. I'm a cheapskate and even I am glad I got one. That made the Vectis my most costly mirror but it is also my favorite.

I will report here when there is news.

If you want more information about the Franken-failures, PM me. I don't want to share too much about that for fear it may encourage people to try.
