I have an old man story for you. I'm not sure how long it would have taken me to catch on if I were younger, so I just blame it on aging.

The little blue heron (little is part of its name, not just a size reference) above is the same one that was there a week ago when I took many shots, all failures.

It was an overcast day not like the usual sunny and bright sky we often have here. I saw the little blue and quickly changed my lens to the Vectis mirror. I had been shooting with a fast 50, so adjusted the ISO much higher. When looking through the viewfinder, I saw that my shutter speed was only 1/30. I quickly raised the ISO and found it only improved to 1/50. I looked up to the sky and commented to my shooting mate that it sure is a dim day. I upped the iso again to a level I don't like using and started trying to focus. I was having an unusually difficult time focusing and my images showed it. Then it finally occurred to me to look at the front of the lens. A square Zeiss lens wipe packet that was at the bottom of my bag had been wedged into the front of the mirror lens. With any other type of lens it would have been like a lens cap but mirrors will still show images with only 20% of the mirror unobstructed. Foolish, I felt. Glad the heron showed up again this past weekend.
Regards,

woodrim

Interesting. I have a f5.6 300mm Paragon mirror lens which is quite sharp.

Well, when there's no edge/spot/highlight in the background, then no donuts

I put it back in but now the manual focus appears not to work, with the lens apparently fixed on infinity.

I'll study the link Woodrim posted, but I'm not confident about making the contacts connect again.

Good while it lasted, but I was planning using it with my S1 at one point.

Ho hum; back to the AF 500.

Do we really need to have a conversation on you being more gentle when your sticking your finger in a hole ?!

Hardly ever had a problem with black bands but that is probably because here we generally have a shortage of light while you have an abundance.
Paul, in the silent mode you're limited by the readout speed of the succesive lines of sensor, which is quite long vs. the actual shutter speed. So if you move your camera slightly during the exposure the subject moves slightly and straight edges become wavy or wonky. The total readout readout time of the A7Riv sensor in silent mode is 1/10th of a second uncompressed and 1/20th of a second compressed. The Riii series models are slightly faster but the Rii series even slower. So especially with a long lens you will see the effect of a slight camera movement during this 1/10th or 1/20th of a second. The A9 and A1 are the only ones with a much faster readout speed (< 1/100th sec)

And the black lines people talk about with the silent shutter you only get with electric lamp light when you see the effect of the 50 cycles alternating current. Sunlight is continuous enough not to see this effect
