For now my main conclusion is that a decent tripod makes life so much easier when using the 500+ mm mirrors. Acquiring critical focus with the focus magnification on is so hard when the image is jumping around! The Minolta 250 is OK handheld, but monopod helps.

I agree. PLUS, once you get over 300mm you have to use such ridiculously fast shutter speeds, that a tripod is a necessity for other reasons.

Very hard to nail the focus with mirror lenses !

1 Donut keyboard

a7rií + MC Rubinar 4.5/300 Macro (MC Рубинар 4.5/300 Makpo; M42)

2 Diminishing donuts

a7rii + MC MTO-11CA 10/1000 (1986; M42)

MTO = Максутова Теле-Объектив (Maksutov Tele-objektiv)
made by: LZOS (Lytkarino Optical Glass Factory); ЛЗОС (Лыткаринский завод оптического стекла)

WOW! I love the donut keyboard. What a creative way to utilize those lovely little rings of light!
To see is to enjoy. To see beyond is to rejoice.

And a few Nikon orange stripe 8/500. The first image was taken through a small opening in the foreground foliage.

You are the man Mike! Again a great set of birds. I really need the Vectis adapter, that 400 looks great. And the orange striped 500 is no slouch either!
