For now my main conclusion is that a decent tripod makes life so much easier when using the 500+ mm mirrors. Acquiring critical focus with the focus magnification on is so hard when the image is jumping around! The Minolta 250 is OK handheld, but monopod helps.

I agree. PLUS, once you get over 300mm you have to use such ridiculously fast shutter speeds, that a tripod is a necessity for other reasons.

You are the man Mike! Again a great set of birds. I really need the Vectis adapter, that 400 looks great. And the orange striped 500 is no slouch either!
