Following earlier open view on ths theme from fellow Dyxumers (which I enjoyed a lot), I will add one too after an amazing last night on (10 May 2024).
I had the pleasure to see the effects of an almost perfect storm at the beach in Petten,whee the 'pole village' provided a nice decor. Normally when aurora reaches us so far south, you have to look in northern direction, but now it was all over the place at the peak. We spent there a good time, from approx 22.45 to 01.15 with changing conditions and all colors you can imagine. Warning: it's a lengthy thread, sorry ! #1 At arrival ![]() #2 Sunset, moon and aurora in one pcture :-) ![]() #3 ![]() #4 ![]() #5 ![]() #6 ![]() #7 ![]() #8 ![]() #9 ![]() #10 Look there! ![]() #11 ![]() #12 Looking straight up ![]() #13 ![]() #14 ![]() #15 ![]() #16 ![]() #17 Looking east ![]() #18 Looking south ![]() #19 ![]() #20 Like a sunbeam ![]() #21 North / north-east ![]() #22 ![]() #23 ![]() #24 ![]() #25 ![]() #26 ![]() #27 ![]() #1,2 with A7IV and Sigma 2.8/24-70mm DG DN, the rest with A99ii + Sony 2.8-16-38mm ZA SSM TFL and your patience ![]() |

Excellent work, Fred. For me, an aurora shot needs a simple compelling foreground to anchor it in reality, which you've achieved. A view only of the sky could be an abstract painting.

Thanks guys!
@ Dopol: It's a bit of both, I am keeping an eye on the conditions with some tools, but you never know. Yesterday they said there would be another chance, but I didn't go. It was reported from the same site that there was not much to see. So it was luck I picked the right night to go. @alanfrombangor: I agree, but included a few of the sky only for a bit of variation in the lenghty set ![]() |

I am amazed at how many photogs chose that same site. Great set. Tfs. I am closer to the equator and quite envious of the northern latitude inhabitants!

Thanks Chris, it's a 'famous' place for photogs, also for sunsets. Some photographers had traveled more than an hour to capture the aurora here. Later this year I will be there for a workshop light painting ![]() Edited by Fred_S - 19 May 2024 at 09:47 |

Oh wow!! I somehow missed this!
Must have mistaken it for the other Aurora thread ![]() Looks like you had a treat just like us ![]() Really liking the beach setting especially the beach line leading to the aurora in your shots. Also good on the reflections. Getting reflection shots is on my list but now you have tempted me with the beach shots too! Too many kinds of images I want to capture and not enough sun spots large enough give me those chances in south England ![]() |

Nice work Fred.
Good to see you caught up in the moment as I would have been had I the opportunity. Liked to see human interactions with the magnificent celestial phenomenon Agree w with Alan 100%, aurora photos by themselves are only at best abstract visions (due to their inherent nature) Fred, was that you in #27 ![]() ![]() |
