'Camera Error' in Sony documentation is a generic message that might mean almost anything, but it generally signifies something rather seriously wrong.

In the middle of a MFNR sequence that I was doing as a test, my almost-10-year-old A55 choked before completing the sequence and displayed that error. It's unresponsive now and won't power on - or off. The red activity indicator stays permanently lit until I remove the battery. I also tried other batteries.

Interestingly, the shutter has remained closed, which is not a normal state for SLT cameras, so I suppose that indicates a shutter control failure.

Some months back I noticed that its GPS system had failed - perhaps just coincidence, perhaps not.

The camera had already been relegated to backup for my A77, and I even stopped using it as a travel camera because I have smaller, lighter options that I prefer.

I really don't need an A55 anymore, so I'm not seeking suggestions or sympathy, just relaying the story as a tribute to what was once a well liked and reliable tool. Poor little guy. RIP, old buddy.

I totally get it. When you've used a tool for that many years it feels like it has a soul and you form an attachment. I feel like that for my A700 and A900, but not so much for my A77 which I've used more than either one. RIP little guy!
