As promised, few from today, with OIS off. Firmware is not updated yet (running the update now). Same locations as above. I still have the same difficulties with light, focus and motion blur, but to my eyes the new photos are much better in terms of details and are more like what I expected. I am not sure if it is visible here, but even when the focus is a little off or the light is a little dark, I still see more details.

You can compare #10 below with #3 above...

10

Sony ILCE-7RM2 + Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS | 600.0 mm | f/6.3 | 1/1600 sec | ISO 200

Or #11 and #12 below which are a bit out of focus, but still more details.

11

Sony ILCE-7RM2 + Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS | 600.0 mm | f/6.3 | 1/1600 sec | ISO 200

12

Sony ILCE-7RM2 + Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS | 600.0 mm | f/6.3 | 1/1600 sec | ISO 200

The series below with the fish was underexposed and I had to push exposure +1 - +1.5 in LR. Still, to me, looks better than the pictures above...

13 I got a big lunch!

Sony ILCE-7RM2 + Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS | 600.0 mm | f/6.3 | 1/1600 sec | ISO 250

14 Too big...

Sony ILCE-7RM2 + Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS | 600.0 mm | f/6.3 | 1/1600 sec | ISO 250

15 Maybe this one?

Sony ILCE-7RM2 + Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS | 600.0 mm | f/6.3 | 1/1000 sec | ISO 320

16 Got it!

Sony ILCE-7RM2 + Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS | 600.0 mm | f/6.3 | 1/1000 sec | ISO 320

17 No one is trying to steal my lunch?

Sony ILCE-7RM2 + Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS | 600.0 mm | f/6.3 | 1/1000 sec | ISO 640

18 I can dig in!

Sony ILCE-7RM2 + Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS | 600.0 mm | f/6.3 | 1/1000 sec | ISO 640

And lastly, a greater flamingo in sunset light... (also had to add +1.5 in the exposure and still happy with the result)

19

Sony ILCE-7RM2 + Sony FE 200-600mm F5.6-6.3 G OSS | 600.0 mm | f/6.3 | 1/1250 sec | ISO 400

Overall, I am more happy with the photos above, with OIS off and the success rate is much much higher...

Since you are experiencing that disabling OSS improves your keepers rate, have you yet tried with OSS enabled and different OSS modes selected? I think either mode 2 (panning subjects) or 3 (fast and irregularly moving subjects) might offer some improvement when birds are the subject.

Thank you Hezu. I switch between mode 1 for static birds and mode 3 for BIF. But maybe mode 2 is better? Or even mode 1 for all situations? Definitely something to learn...
I wonder if there a good way to test the lens IS. Right now I am not sure if it just a personal feeling or maybe it is just the learning curve or maybe a real problem...

OK, I think issue is solved. I updated the firmware to Ver. 4.01 and today went out again. It is a different location with different type of birds, but now I get what I expected from the lens - when everything is correct (focus, exposure, stable hands etc.), there are plenty of details. But more important, the bad photos look like the bad photos I am used to - I can tell that the photo is out of focus or there is too much movement. No more weird smears.

Here are few examples:

What an improvement and you recieved that in a few days. Sharpnes and detail are okay. Number 23 and 24 lack a bit of detail in the darker parts. Some pp can lighten those areas. The fence in no 22 distracts a bit.
Thank you for keeping us informed. Nice work!!! You and that combo will be allright in the future.
