A few years ago I purchased a TT560 flash, dirt cheap (25 € if I recall well). It runs on 4 x AA batteries, alcaline 6 Volts, or Ni-mH, much lower voltage but larger current. It's a great flash for the money. I use it in optical S2 slave for backgrounds. Trouble is, it recycles too slowly to keep up with my main flash, a Godox V860 with a 12 Volts Li-Ion battery. That's why I have tested the TT560 on 2 x Li-Ion 18650 batteries from a dead laptop. That's 7.2 volts nominal, and a lot less internal resistance, i.e a lot more current. So far so good. Recycle time is incredibly short, with no sign of overheating. It remains to be seen if it's ok in the long run.

18650 cells are 4.1V or 4.2V fully charged, so 8.2V/8.4V max. I generally stick a silicon diode or two in series to drop the voltage a bit when replacing 4 or 5 AA cells, but I guess you will see how long it runs like that! The circuit may run hot if you're cycling fast. |

Most of the recycling occurs well below 5V, to deliver on the order of 60 joules. Hence, current is everything and peak voltage is nothing as far as capacitor charger. As long as the control electronics is fine with 7+ volts, I think all is ok.

I have drained the batteries in series of 20 full pops/cooldown/
Indeed, after 20 flashes the flash self protects by taking forever to recycle; during the next 10 minutes. The manual also talks about a temperature-triggered shutdown; that I have never caused. With 4 AA batteries, I stop when the flash says so (power led blinks). Voltage is 4.10 V. I get 300 flashes from 4 x AA N-mH given for 2000mA. That's an estimated 108 joules per flash. With 2 x 18650 Li-Ion, I stop when recharge time increases suddenly from <= 1 to a few seconds. I get 540 flashes. Conclusion ; it works for me |
