Well, I see that there's now a Mac Mini with an M2 pro chip that can support 3 displays. Can upgrade to 32GB also. This could be just what I need.
It's kind of what I was hoping to see. I've been eyeing up a Mac Studio but holding off until the new Minis were released. Has anyone else seen something they're tempted by? |

If you're into Apple, they make a lot of sense. I am not interested in an Apple computer. I have an iPhone from work, that is more then enough for me. So, no, there is nothing I am tempted by.
Oh, wait, the Sony 20-70/4G is tempting, something really unique! |

I could use more of everything than my current 14" Macbook Pro with 16GB and 1TB. More screen, more memory, more storage. I don't really have much need for a portable system. I priced out an M2 Pro Mini today. It wasn't that far from a Mac Studio which has twice as much memory speed and more graphics power.
But the M2 Pro supports 8K @ 60 Hz and 4K @ 240 Hz. Sigh. Maybe I'll splurge on the 16" with the M2 Max. Edited by QuietOC - 18 January 2023 at 00:26 |

Fair enough. Final Cut Pro is my preferred video editing software, and I also like Apple Motion. So, sticking with Apple makes more sense for me. Good luck with that lens  How are you doing, dodging the temptation of adding new lenses to your lineup? |

Yes, the price difference between top Mac Mini and lower end Mac studio is small enough to create a bit of a dilemma The 16" MacBook with the M2 Max would certainly be a way to avoid all the tradeoffs bar price... Edited by Wētāpunga - 18 January 2023 at 01:22 |

As someone who is on his 3rd mini, all I can say is "I Love the Mini"
1st, there is a beautiful elegance to it. When you work w it everyday and see it every day, that counts. I think the Studio mini will be a dud because it's just a square block and loses all the aesthetics Apple is known for. I was tired of getting hacked, spy ware, no privacy and blue screen crashes and got the 1st gen mini. Now I have one of the earliest M1's. My 2nd Intel mini just wasn't very capable w the latest app's coming out, especially struggled w Apple's Photos app, which is the app, being into photography I used most Now the appleinsider reviewer called the mini "Apple's cheapest computer" which misses the entire beauty of the mini. When you buy one the only thing you should be concerned about is getting the most memory. Everything else, storage, ports, keyboard, trackpad/mouse, display is up to you and your preference. You can cheaply up grade your core computer (mini) and don't have to upgrade everything else w it. My Apple wireless trackpad is still the one I purchased w my 1st mini. My wireless keyboard is an excellent Logitech, half the price of the Apple and I've had it for years now. I work my mini off of my LG bigscreen. I'm not stuck streaming movies on a laptop. If I want to be portable I have my iPad. Storage, I think we all have Seagate, Western externals we can plug in anytime Anyway, the mini isn't the cheapest, it's the best deal out there. I couldn't believe it but the M2 base is $599, my M1 base was $699. I thought that was a Great price, I do have the 18G mem. As far as I can tell, the M2 is faster than the M1 chip, but I don't think It would be discernible to me. I understand it's a better chip for gamers and I know some who have stayed away from Apple just because the Intels handle gaming better. M2 Pro is just what it says for professional money work computing. Way overkill for the average home computing. I am extremely happy w my current set up |

I've owned my Mac Mini M1 for a year now it is super. And the most important thing is, that it works great for photo editing with LR and On1 Photo Raw! It's quiet and quick. No more noisy fans like my Windows PC. The so-called AMD pro graphics card for Windows was no longer supported with compatible drivers rendering it incompatible with my photo editing software. A new compatible graphics card would have cost a good portion of what my Mac Mini cost. The Windows PC was a money pit. Switching to the Mac Mini was a no brainer The only drawback for some people might be the limited connections. I bought a Caldigit TS-4 hub.
One issue I've had with my Mac Mini M1 is that sometimes it will no longer recognize an external HD after sleep or rebooting. I've heard of others having this problem too. I have had to set it in energy setting to not let hard drives sleep and when rebooting, I manually eject the hard drive. Of course external drives for a massive photo collection is a must since the internal SSD drive space is limited. I'm switching my external storage to a Synology NAS and TB-4 SSD. Thank you Joe, for the link to the Apple Insider comparison of the M1-M2-M2 Pro Mac Minis! That should be useful for anyone interested in going with a new Mac Mini. |

I tried out a new Silicon Macbook air at the start of 2021 (with 16GB RAM and 1TB drive) and was pretty much sold on the new chips. I have to say it was mostly to get Final Cut Pro for video work.
With a limited work area (the shelf space for a vertical tower computer, is the perfect size for my lens dry-cabinet, so it sits there instead). So I am after a computer with a small size. Covid19 really changed how we teach at Universities now, so I do a lot more with both videos and animations. And both FCPX and Apple Motion are pretty easy to pick up and use (and don't have the subscription fees of Adobe). But the M1 chip really struggles at times with this. It is much faster than my Alienware (unsurprising as that's form 2015) but I get to see the spinning beach-ball regularly. I also can't use an external monitor and a Wacom tablet with it. The M2-Pro mini looks to solve all the limitations of the Macbook air plus excel at both video and photo editing, as well as not clutter my desk. |
