@homeranger: Skip, this composition has some inherent appeal despite the fact that there is no subject located at any of the itersections. My conclusion is that the lower-left intersection represents the point at which the scene will be resolved (i.e. the point at which the catch will be made). This anticipation creates tension and movement that add impact to the image. I'll award a pass provided that you can assure me that you cropped from only one side.

Cheers... Brian

Brian...I after going back and finding the original file I am sad to report that I don't deserve a pass. I cropped equally from both sides. I didn't realize it when I posted the photo that I had cropped it from both sides. I'll try again.

Hi, here are my attempts:

Rule of thirds.
I have clearer ones but I wanted to see if it works for relatively large subjects too. Both the crisps and applesauce are on a cross section but I did not center them at these points as I wanted the two close to eachother.

A55, Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro @ 35mm, ISO100, f/4.5, 1/2000s - not cropped, just border added.

Golden ratio, or actually the golden spiral.
This is a tougher one to do in the field but fun to try.

A55, Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro @ 30mm, ISO100, f/8, 1/160s - height cropped to get 1 to 1.6.... ratio, border added.

I'm using the movements of the fans to direct the spiral to the dancer's face. See here with overlay.

Just starting out here at dyxum. Thought I'd get into the assignments.

This is a pure rendition of the capture. No PP

@Minky: The ROT intersections are clearly on the two chips and sauce, but I am not sure which is the subject. Your second shot is a nice example of the golden mean. While the bottom scarf is not on the spiral, it is parallel to it and emphasizes the overall movement in the photo. The dancer's head is placed perfectly at the focal point of the spiral. You get a pass.

@zedhead: Rob, There were some on the team who would have preferred the horizon to be on the lower third line, but there was general agreement that the lighthouse was well placed. I am not so concerned about the horizon since having it on the lower third line would have placed the ship at an intersection and the lighthouse is the much more appealing subject for this image (IMHO). The top of the lighthouse is not perfectly placed, but certainly good enough for a pass.

Cheers... Brian

Yippeee! Passed. Over to the next assignment. :)

My challenge for the first photo was actually to make a food picture in which both the chips and sauce are the subject. The chips being the primary and sauce the secondary, since it's "lightning crips" with applesauce. And it's combining both the use of a diagonal and the intersections of the rule of third to attract the attention.

By the way, in case anybody finds it useful; I created this Diagram a little while ago to get accustomed to the golden ratio/triangle and spiral in relation to the rule of thirds.

Bye, Ming-Hua

Been away for a while. I took this in San Francisco on an A200 with 300mm lens handheld so quite chuffed it came out as well as it did as it was quite busy with traffic and foot passengers. There is also no crop on the image.

Since I have been out in the wild for 3 years with no critiques or criticisms other than people buying my photos and telling me how awesome they are , I figured I may as well brush up on some of this stuff and re-learn the basics since i never give them a thought when shooting.

@Ridley: Thanks for venturing into the assignments. I look forward to reviewing your entries. We do require a bit of data on submitted photos and there is no Exif embedded in the JPG and none on Photobucket. Can you provide some details about the camera, lens, and date of capture?

Thanks... Brian

@tonyk79: The placement of the guitar at the upper-right ROT intersection earns you a pass.

Cheers... Brian

The eye (at least mine) is drawn to the lower left intersection framed by the pipes. Shot for this assignment.

a850, 50mm

Sorry. I posted 2 before having passed first one. My bad. Please forgive.

@Chinasaur: I find your photo interesting for the imagery with the ductwork, pipes, and one-way sign, but there is nothing of interest at the lower-left intersection. Please try again and place a subject at an intersection.

Cheers... Brian
