OK, here's another attempt at part B this time using the tripod and walking directly towards and away from the subject to match the wide and tele fields of view with the camera level.
16mm ![]() walking back at 35mm to match 16mm ![]() 100mm ![]() walking forward at 35mm to match 100mm ![]() |

@clk230: Sorry for the delay in responding. You presented a nice illustration and demonstrated your understanding in the images. So... On to Part C!
Cheers... Brian |

Part C. Hide and Seek
Something caught my eye! ![]() Now moving to exclude the "no parking" sign and some distractions in the background. ![]() |

@clk230: That's a pass, James. Sorry it took me so long to get to this. You now have a pass on all three parts of the assignment and can proceed to the next. Cheers... Brian

@bms44974: Thanks Brian. I appreciate the time you put into this. I'm enjoying thinking about about what I need to think about before pressing the shutter release!

Before I begin this assignment, I need to ask one question.
Part A and Part B are pretty self explanatory, Part C I understand, EXCEPT I want to know what my limits in movement left and right are. I can move the camera from eye level all the way to ground level, and as high as I can reach (thank God for tilting LCD Displays!), but what are my limits on horizontal movements? TIA, Gary |

There are no hard and fast rules (at least on this assignment) regarding how much or in what direction the camera angle can move. We simply ask that you not move forward or backward (or zoom in or out). The objective is to become accustomed to recognizing a scene worth photographing and then evaluating the surroundings to optimize and isolate the subject for the greatest visual impact. Our brains tend to filter out the distractions, but the camera records them without bias. Adjusting the camera position can provide an image that corresponds more closely to our initial visual impression of the scene.

Okay Brian, or whomever is grading this month. Let's see if I figured out the assignment. The first part was pretty easy, I think.
![]() This is the full image size. Unfortunately, only 100mm lens, since I was too close to use the 200mm setting. Here's the crop. ![]() The boys playing were different, of course, since it took time to change lenses. This next part I may have screwed up, I'm not sure. First is the Wide Angle shot. ![]() This photo is shot at 28mm. The following shot is taken at 55mm after I've moved back some. ![]() This is the telephoto, shot at 75mm. ![]() This is the Normal shot to match the telephoto shot, again, at 55mm. ![]() And finally, the Hide and Seek photos. The anchor was the main subject of the photo ![]() Moving to the left about 4-5' and tilting the camera up to re-frame the photo gave me this: ![]() I hope I didn't forget something on the Part B of the assignment, like shooting the subject with a 55mm lens from the starting position. If I did, I'll go shoot it again, when I have time. Gary |

I have been attempting this challenge over the past few weeks, so here are my efforts:
Part A. "Telephoto Compression" Telephoto lens ![]() Taken on A65 with Beercan @ 1/20s f/8 ISO100 210mm Wide Angle lens ![]() Taken with Sigma 18-50 F2.8 @ 1/13s f/22 ISO100 18mm Part B. "Zoom with your Feet" Original scene with normal lens ![]() Taken with Minolta 50mm F1.7 @ 1/40s f/4 ISO400 50mm Wide Angle lens ![]() Taken with Sigma 18-50 F2.8 @ 1/80s f/4 ISO400 24mm Normal Lens further away ![]() Taken with Minolta 50mm F1.7 @ 1/40s f/4 ISO400 50mm Telephoto lens ![]() Taken with beer can @ 1/80s f/4 ISO400 210mm Normal lens close up ![]() Taken with Minolta 50mm F1.7 @ 1/40s f/4 ISO400 50mm Part C. Hide and Seek I was walking up to a beacon at the top of a hill when I took the original frame. ![]() Taken with Sigma 18-50 F2.8 @ 1/6s f/16 ISO100 20mm Eliminated the distractions of the tree, bin and man sleeping on the bench by moving to the left. It's still not the most dynamic image in the world but I hadn't realised that I'd switched my camera back on stuffing it in the bag overnight and only managed three pictures before it quit on me ![]() ![]() |
