The mark II cameras are still current, unfortunately Sony never offers firmware updates for slightly older cameras

True, was about 14 month since the last update for the a7RII...

Got very happy when the v2.00 for the a7RIII came today with full support for the 400 f2.8 GM and the 24 f1.4 GM lenses.

Had hopped that the a7RII would get the same love, but no, not so far

Sony must improve a lot regarding this.

Interesting that α9 didn't get a firmware update either - ok, it did get one (V3.10) about month ago, but that didn't yet include any SEL24F14GM related updates.

On the other hand, when I quickly tested SEL400F28GM with my α7R II at Finnsih Bird Fair in late August, I didn't notice any effects that this combination wouldn't work reasonably well even without any new firmware updates.

Think the a9 will get one soon just for the SEL24F14GM lens.

Actually the a7RII is listed as fully compatible with the SEL400F28GM if you look at the lens on the Sony site, but I doubt it really is as there are many options in the settings that aren't in the a7RII for this lens.

But most things would work great anyway I believe on the a7RII

I'm pleased. The issue I had with Steady Shot not working for the Tamron SP 70-300mm USD and the LA-EA3 adapter (here) has now been resolved.

Some extras for the a7RIII and a7III is that this update also gets some extra funktions for uses of the LA-EA3 adaptern: In a bit of unexpected great news for A-mount lens users, this camera firmware update adds support for Zone, Expanded Flexible Spot, and Lock-on AF with Sony LA-EA3 lens adapter with a7 III & a7R III.

Just a note that this firmware is reported to be causing issues with third party batteries.

Yes it does and thats great imho, as a bad 3PB could damage the camera. One gets a warning from the camera but, you can bypass it and still use the 3PB one at your own risk.
I mean, buying a camera for $ 2000-3000 and then go cheap on the batteries that might damage the camera???

3PB degrade faster over the years as well and the Sonys do not.
To my first Sony the a700 and before that my Minolta MD7 I bought 3PBs and I had to buy new ones as they got bad quickly, for example for, the a700 I had to buy new 3PBs 3 times but the original was still goo, admitted that it had degraded a tad also in the end but still good enough to be used.

These new cameras are more sensitive than the ones 5-10 years ago with their more sensitive electronics, so I for one would never play Russian roulette with my very expensive cameras.

There are changes in the firmware that could be beneficial to Mark 2 cameras as well. The still current A6000 also missed some firmware updates the A6300 and A6500 got. There is just no love but this is nice for the people who got the mark 3 camera, especially the behavior with the LA-EA3.

Yes, I heard that. Pity. But the LA-EA3 is still current and they seem to be still upgrading the firmware. Maybe they consider that if you buy the latest cameras (hint, hint ) they have on-sensor PDF so you don't need a mirror, and if you want the fastest response times you will need to buy new lenses anyway ....
Miranda F & Sensorex, Sony A58, Nex-6, Dynax 4, 5, 60, 500si/600si/700si/800si, various Sony & Minolta lenses, several Tamrons, lots of MF primes and *far* too many old film cameras . . .
