Thanks for posting, I hadn't seen this yet. It looks like it brings FTP background transfer to the A7M3 (the A7C already supported it). I'll wait with the update for now since it looks pretty involved and I'm not using the function. Waiting for first user reports...

Yes, I just came across this. Does anyone here use these FTP capabilities? I’d be interested in a non-technical explanation of the use cases and advantages.

The main purpose of the ftp-background transfer is - that you can add up to 9 ftp-sites where you can upload your images jpg+raw onto in the background using wifi.
Does Sony support the more secure versions with encryption? (ftps or sftp) It could be handy when on travel to upload your images through wifi onto an appliance or notebook thru the ftp-server. A raspberry pi doesn't cost a fortune. I prefer to leave all wifi stuff of - the same goes for bluetooth. To save battery power. The upgrade itself took 8 minutes - using my old Amd 2core notebook (a machine i use for all firmware-upgrades). There 's no changes on the LA-EA5 front. And there's little to none explanation what Sony means with improved system stability. |

Seen on sonyalpharumors.com - it seems the 4.0 firmware is important for a newly released smartphone app by Sony (only for iOS though).
https://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sony-updates-visual-story-app-with-expanded-features-functions-for-wedding-sports-event-photographers/ the app: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/visual-story/id1529225393 A useless feature for me (being a Sailfish user on my hacked sony). It's only available on iOS it seems. It's a detail about the firmware release 4.0 for the A7III, so we add it to the discussion. |

I use ftp transfer to my NAS appliance. After a shoot i plug the camera in to charge and connect to the ftp service on my NAS and leave it to upload all the pictures for me to go through and delete those I don’t want. It’s pretty fast too. It’s convenient but i could just as easily remove the SD card and do it that way although it adds a few steps to the upload process.
I don’t use it in the field though as I don’t expose the ftp service on my NAS outside of my home network. If I’m away for a few days I transfer the pictures to my laptop and upload to the NAS using a more secure app. I’ve been doing a lot of waterdrop photography recently so the new background transfer will be useful if it works as described. It’s very easy to set up on the camera. It’s a bit harder on the target device if you don’t have some IT knowledge and varies a bit depending on the device but easy enough. |
