    Posted: 09 January 2010 at 14:41
This is the 4th NEW Intermediate photographic assignment: Primary colours

Strong primary colours are often used to identify objects and are frequently used in advertising because of their ability to draw the eye. People often have strong emotional associations with particular colours.

Assignment: Take a shot that relies upon a strong and vivid primary colour (RGB or CMY) as a major compositional element. It doesn't have to be the only colour in the frame, but it has to be the main one, that everybody immediately associates with it.

General Assignment Rules

The general rules for the assignments are as follows :

- clean slate, all “old” assignments will be locked (over time as the new ones are created)
- no mining, shots must be specifically taken for the assignment (we trust you )
- only one assignment at the time. Once started you can only take the next assignment after having passed.
- one dimension crop and minor straightening allowed (to allow different aspect ratios, but don’t crop in both directions)
- max 2 pics per post/try
- you can do the assignments in any order, and repeated as many times as you want
- at least one moderators or admin will comment on every post and determine fail/pass. This might include general C&C as well.
- all members of Dyxum can also leave comments on the shots posted
- id of members that passed will be kept in a "pass post"
- specifically good pictures or good examples of assignment passes will be kept in a new "assignment gallery"
- instructions for specific assignments will generally stay as is (and we'll have to write new ones for new assignments).
- shots posted for the assignments are eligible for selection in the weekly exhibitions

Is that really "primary color" as in "single primary color" (like blue to convey professionalism, green for freshness,...), or "complementary primary colors" (like green vs red, blue vs orange,...)?

Moreover, would it be possible to have a further tip as what is considered "primary"? Are we talking about RGB or CMY here?

Good question.

What I had in mind is one main primary color (RGB or CMY) maybe with a bit of another primary color to provide contrast. No or very limited pastels, the use of the bold color needs to bang off the screen.

Some earlier examples here, allthough these were without pass/try again judging.

Hope it's clear, if not just ask more questions.

Would that work, or does it need to be vivid?

I do think you miss on the grounds of "vivid". I will leave it to pegelli to determine the final judgement, but I think you could start planning what you might be doing for a new shot for this subject.

That is also what I am afraid of. My guess is that it's now time to find a pair of red cherries with a green leaf. (but as I'm not down under, no cherries before several months)

What about renaming this assignment to "Vivid Primary Colour"? With the current description, and without pegelli's answer, I would have submitted a green pastel shot in order to convey freshness.

For me, Gabriel, that's definitely a pass as well as being a good shot.

Gabriel, your second one is definitely a pass and a good shot. The back lighting is very effective and the contrast between the yellowish green of the kiwi and the dark saturated blue give the shot a nice tension.

I've also been pondering your blue ice shot above and was even thinking about given you a pass on that one. It is really only blue, there are significant parts in there that are even quite saturated blue and there is really no other color in there. Anyway no more need to decide because of your second shot of which I also find the composition much better.

The good thing is that I learned things with both shots (even if that's not related to the topic of this assignment)

First shot:

*Ice is "quickly" melting. You'd better use 200/400 ISO than 100 ISO, as the melting can be noticeable within the 30s needed for this kind of exposure at 100 ISO.

*As the ice cubes are melting, composition starts to be harder: cubes are moving by themselves on the small water area resulting from the melting

*DOF: This is shot with a 90mm lens at f/22, yet the depth of field is too small to my taste. It seems that the only way to have an increased DOF is by using a wider lens and crop. This way you can keep the same angle of view but an increased DOF. On a 14Mp APS-C sensor, this should provide significantly better image quality than using f/22 or more.

Second shot:

*White balance is adjusted for my flash (flash on the rear left of the kiwi slice). My background is lit by a torchlight.I wanted my background to be red (in reality it is red), but due to the differences between light sources, it turned out blue. That means that if you want control over your colors, you would better adjust your lights to provide the same "white". For this setup, that likely means color correcting the flash (using gelatines) in order to match the torchlight.

My attempt at vivid colour. The first, a single red rose contrasted with another primary colour; green. However, the emphasis is on the red, and the green is supplementary. The second, I hedged my bets by using a primary colour from RGB, and one from CMY: Red and yellow! Hope these meet with your approval. Incidentally, I've resized all of my images before posting to Flickr, so would you mind telling me if the exif data is here for both of these, please?

Thank you. Ian.

@Berean: The rose in #1 is vivid, but it looks more pink than red. Think of your first set of new water color paints as a kid. That's the kind of effect we're looking for here. It's a lovely shot, by the way . The high-key lighting and pattern in #2 dilute what impact you might have had from the red and yellow. There is also a lot of red in the yellow channel so the contrast betwen these colors is not as great as one might expect. Please try again with this assignment.

Cheers... Brian

BTW, the exif is not there in either image. The "b" at the end of http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2797/4328092369_5bce4492c3_b.jpg indicates that you have linked to the "big" (flicker generated) rendering of your original. I believe replacing the "b" with an "o" will link to the JPG file you uploaded to flicker containing the exif data.

Okay, to start over. I have uploaded the shots to Flickr, and resized them: The exif data should be there.

These are my submissions for this assignments, all information as per previous entry. Thank you for your patience, and help. Ian.

Berean - I'm not getting the exif on these, but I like them a lot. You do a wonderful job on the these still-lifes (lives??). I'd like it if you start a thread away from the assignments just of your still-life shots. There is probably a thread already in the themed views section.
