Hello Everyone
I guess this is where I introduce myself! I've recently gotten more serious again about photography, and have been hitting this forum pretty hard to learn things. My first alpha mount I bought in 1989ish when I was in college. I took photo classes via the architecture department (didn't have to be a major!) and that got me into darkroom work. I was never any serious professional, but I made a little money off motorsports work at the local racetrack, taking pictures of the racers, blowing them up, and selling them to the subjects at the next race. I eventually had a darkroom at home, though most of my work was done in develop-myself slides. When that camera died I picked up another maxxum and only ever ran a few rolls of film through it, since the wife's point and shoot digital was so much more convenient. When I finally figured out that my old lenses would work on a new Sony, and the prices were far less for the bodies than I had come to expect, I pickup up an a33 SLT. That has renewed my interest, so here I am. None of my lens inventory was anything to brag about, but I always loved the 50/1.7 I had picked up for the film camera so I'm glad I can still use it - its not bad at all for portaiture. I live near Seattle, WA, USA. I look forward to learning more! I'll probably ask a lot of dumb questions. |

I'm new ...ish but just ran across this 'newbie' thread. I started out with Canon film in the early 80's and came over to digital in 2008 with the Leica-M8 w/Leica primes. The lenses were great but I never really captured a lot of keepers'. Also, I didn't much care for the upper management of the company.
Anyway, I sold it all and just bought a Leica P&S and man was that ever boring! I sold it too and bought the A900 with CZ 135 but not before I considered the NEX7, A77 and Fuji X100. The full-frame coupled with Zeiss glass just seemed more useful without the usual conversion of equivalent focal length crap and cutesy features that brain-dead marketers like to add in. In the end I discovered that you don't always get what you pay for, but the A900 seems like a solid peace of gear when coupled with standout glass. Regards, DanO. Hi, I`m a complete newb to digital slr/slt photography. Having received an A35 from Santa recently I have managed to pick up some very cheap but decent lens thanks initially to the reviews provided here.
I`m 45 shortly and dabbled in film in my very early 20`s with a Ricoh XRX an Uncle acquired for me to go on safari in Kenya. I tended to use auto settings where possible and had little time to learn so shot 30 odd rolls of film and got a couple of decent shots!! Did learn the basics of manual focusing I guess as I took a cheap Zenit push pull zoom which was hideous to use but provided the odd good moment.I used the camera sporadically for a good few years thereafter but had too many interests to learn properly and no internet around to help which may have made a difference! I used a Canon powershot G2 for a period in the late 90`s early noughties but thats it as far as my experience goes, I am looking forward to learning more from this excellent resource and will take up some assignments soon as I get to grips with my kit. I will continue to browse until then, cheers. |

Hi Dyxum
Have been a Minolta user since age 5 when I used my Granddads 7000 to take a picture of him, a camera I inherited a few years later and still have and use to this day! I have over the years collected some great glass and taken a lot of film and digital images, as with most amateur photographers I have had months of horror to every moment of brilliance. I have recently got back into the world of photography purchasing a couple of new lenses including a 85mm f1.4 from Stuartcliffe (Many thanks). I am always amazed by how much abuse good quality camera equipment can take, I have had to dry my 600si and a 28mm f2.8 on a radiator after a very, very wet climb of Snowden, will never get over the fact it worked after a couple of hours drying out. I have always been into landscapes, but with the 85mm f1.4 and a 100mm f2 I am looking to get more into portraits, I have photographed weddings and christenings for friends but would like to get into shooting some more. I made a great flash defuser out of some tin foil and a rubber band for in church photos and it was excellent!! Current thoughts are full frame DSLR (a900/a850) I had a test of an a65 and I have to say I wasn't all that impressed, probably needed a bit more time to get a feel for it but there was no WOW factor when pixel peeping, which surprised me?? Anyway that’s a short(ish) intro. Lee |

Hi everyone I am Joe, I'm originally from the States but is now working in Asia in the media industry. The first camera I owned was a Minolta followed by a Sony P&S and I only recently started getting into more serious photography. I got a Sony A65 and this site has provided a great deal of info and tips. Although the problem is that now I developed a serious case of lens lust that can't seem to be cured ! Hopefully I can make some contributions once I'm more confident with my work.
Cheers, Joe |

The lens bug can be a serious problem if it gets into your head. I remember when I became afflicted with Leica primes that ran me about $8k.

Wow -- $8K! So that was, what, two lenses? Or did you get the volume discount and get three for that price? |

Later,

Hi, Joe. I'm pretty new here, too. Dyxum is a great site for info and great photos. I'm not that good, but I jumped right in by posting some of my shots. Nobody's been mean. So don't worry too much, join the fun. Everybody here loves looking at pictures. And there are folks of all skill / artistic levels. Again, Welcome! Mike Edit: Sorry about your lens lust. Myself, I'm MUCH better now. Edited by GlassEye - 19 January 2012 at 17:48 |

Hello everyone. I am Steven.
I am originally from England, but now live in Oregon, USA. I started getting interested in photography when I got a Minolta Dynax 500si super in the late 90s, but although I took some good pictures with it, I never got past the scenic modes! PASM were scary letters I avoided at all costs. So when, 18 months ago, I got my Sony A550 I resolved to learn how to take the pictures myself, rather then let the camera do it for me. I soon found this site, and I am continually picking up tips and information from the posts here. Of the many sites I have visited, this one stands out as (probably) the friendliest, especially for learners like myself. Thank you for all your help so far. |
