Just got notified that NiSi is releasing a 15mm f/4 Sunstar Super Wide Angle Full Frame ASPH Lens for Canon RF, Sony E, Nikon Z and Fujifilm X mounts is now available.
Weighs in at 470g and has a 72mm filter. Manual focus only. Can't tell if it has electric contacts like Voigtlander or none like Laowa. |

MTF charts look nice
10-blade (or any 'even' number) are apparently part of the key to the better/nicer sunstars? Some Voigtländers have 10 or even 12 blades. While the AF people aim for 7 or 9. An odd number will produce 14 or 18 point stars which can overlap/merge. While the 10 or 12 blade will make 10 or 12 pointed stars with more gaps in the angles. |

The key to sunstars is that the inner edge of the iris blades has to be dead straight. Older Sigmas have this*, but most Sony and Minolta ones have a curved edge right to the end which gives broad brush ends instead of nice spikes.
I've noticed that modern lenses often have curved blades wide open to give good bokeh and straight ends to give good sunstars at f11, which is very neat. Easy to check which - just look at the on-line review images. Reviewers love sunstars! ![]() IME the best sunstars coem form really cheap old nasty sigmas lenses. ![]() |

Seems a bit big for a 15mm f4
Laowa 15mm f2 66mm x 82mm x 500g (72mm filter thread) Nisi 15mm f4 75.6mm × 80.5mm x 470g (72mm filter thread) Voigtlander 15mm f4.5 67.5 x 66.4mm x 294g (58mm filter thread) laowa 14mm f4 58mm x 59mm x 228g (52mm filter thread) |

I'd noticed that too, having a Voigtlander 15mm already in the bag. And my Voigtlanders and Loxias all have straight, even numbered aperture blades so in principle, I'm set for sunstars ![]() |
