I just received email from Capture One saying:
From today, January 18, we will no longer offer versions of Capture One that are limited to supporting only one camera brand. This affects the following products:
•     Capture One (for Sony)
•     Capture One for Fujifilm
•     Capture One for Nikon
Instead, users will only be able to purchase or upgrade to Capture One Pro, which includes support for all camera brands.

The direct effect of this move is higher price.

I got the email too. There is a temporary discount to upgrade to the full Pro.

I've been able to edit Pentax files on the Sony only version by just changing a single exif tag.

I still pretty much only use free version features. It still seems not to work well with my Radeon RX 5600 XT. It might be time to try other options.

Personally, after more than 2 years of using C1 (for Sony), lately I received a license to Adobe full Creative Suit package from work (a stupid story: I needed only Adobe Illustrator, but our IT person told me that we can only buy software from a specific third party company and they only sell the full suit, so I was forced to buy the full package, which is more expensive, in order to get Illustrator).
I checked Lightroom and started using it more and more instead of C1. While C1 deals better with details in dark areas and seems to allow higher dynamic range, Lightroom workflow is much more comfortable and intuitive to me and the available plugins (for example, direct export to Smugmug, adding borders) are nice bonus that make the workflow much faster and easier.
And now that Lightroom is much cheaper, I guess that next time I upgrade my camera and my current C1 21 will not support it, I will not continue with C1.

Lightroom is about the only Adobe software I haven't used. I've been using the CS6 version of Adobe Suite for a long time. I would prefer to avoid their cloud software. So far Phase One hasn't required anything like that, but I haven't used their subscription model.

Personally this is great news for me - as a Sony subscriber I get the full C1 at the same subscription price. Occasionally friends would share some pics from their non Sony cameras and it was a pain not being able to see them in C1.

Hopefully this will mean they’ll use the brand specific pricing on the full C1 package for newcomers (as the full price historically was IMHO ludicrously high). That’s the only risk I foresee, that they’ll keep the high pricing for newbies and alienate a lot of hobbyists who won’t consider it an alternative to lightroom. That aside, it’s good news for Sony C1 subscribers.

And more good news. This simply means that every year there will be more and more less expensive and open (AKA, free) software alternatives.

The vendor specific version shows files from any brand camera. It just doesn't allow editing those files.

I've never met anyone who used c1, or anything other than Lightroom. It's 120SEK/month currently for a small cloud, Lightroom Classic and some app, I guess it's just "another small subscription". Most guides are for Lightroom. People in general like to do what others are doing.*

*Shrug*, I've never touched Lightroom with a stick but I did occasionally like to dabble with the C1 free Sony version. Mainly I use Darktable and am pretty happy with it. I hope there are viable raw editors for the Linux desktop for as long as there's a Linux desktop.

*I did buy a speculative ADBE recently and may buy more because people are people and big corps know people

I got the email as well. It doesn't look like it affects C1 Express.

For someone with a perpetual licence this doesn't really affect me (yet). I get a free upgrade to the pro version in April.

But it will be a significant price barrier to anyone now wanting to get into the system. And possibly make an upgrade to a later version of the perpetual licence much more problematic.

Hello

Same mail in my inbox, for me the only important thing is that the price stays constant, question is for how long
For me it do not mater what cameras it supports, I have only Sony body’s.
I hope that thay includ the iOS version into the subscription.
If I would make the software I would make it very easy to use as aperture was and lower the price to a level that everyone want to get it, profit would come in by mass of user.

Regards

Well now you can count one It had a nice transition from Apple's Aperture which I used before and it's a very powerful software. I tried Lightroom but didn't take to it in the same way. On the guides front, there's a good community built around C1 and good engagement straight from the devs. I believe it's very similar to Lightroom so little reason to switch from one to the other, but I wouldn't shoot it down

Hi, I use C1, abandoning LR5.7 when I got a Sony a7Riii.
I much prefer the results I get for my landscape/seascape photography I get with it.

Using RAWtherapee. Tried LR in the past, admittedly long ago, and I did not like it at all. So, I use free RAWTherapee. unfortunately I think the last update is over a year ago.
