Orienteering World Cup tournee arrived Finland last weekend and there were traditional orienteering competitions in the forests of Vihti. Then on Tuesday evening first time ever this sport came into the Central Helsinki in form of mixed sprint relay. The location of start, finish and exchanges was at Senate Square and the rest of the competition area was in the surrounding blocks.

1. Prior the competition start there was chance to test orienteering in a labyrinth

2. Cathedral stairs soon started to fill up with the audience

3. Television was obviously present

4. Eventually the first leg runners were guided to the start line

5. Ready!

5. Go!

7. Taking first look on the map while running

8. After a while the competitors returned to Senate Square

9. But this was not yet time for the exchange as the route continued on the cathedral stairs!

10. The men on the second leg had started to gather at the exchange area

11. Once the second part of the route was done, it was time for the exchange. Sweden's Tove Alexanderson leading the competition.

12. Apparently running 3.3 km route is quite demanding

13. Eventually the men had also made the first half of the route and it was their time to climb the steps

14. Finland teams 1 and 4 having a tight contest before the second exchange.

15. Men ran also on the third leg

16. One of the control points was on the steps of the Government Palace

17. Russian Federation 3

18. Germany 1

19. The faster teams were already running into the opposite direction...

20. On the last leg it was again women who were running and Sweden 1 was still in the lead

21. Running in the stairs

22. Fairly soon the anchor of the winning Swedish team finished and was met with her team mates

23. Swiss got the second place

24. The home crowd cheered on the Finnish teams, although the best one (Finland 4, bib number 40) ended up in 8th place (or 6th in World Cup standings as there was two Swedish and Swiss team ahead of them and only results of the best national team counts for those results)

25. One of the control points had been in front of the House of Estates

Colorful and lively scenes! Lots of action! A fine series!

My absolute favorite is #7 - I would have expected an IPad instead of a map, though!

Thank you for taking us with you to that event!
