The last tattooed headhunters of Nagaland, India's Konyak tribe

The Konyaks, an isolated ethnic group defined culturally by headhunting and elaborate facial tattoos, live in Nagaland's forest interiors.

Tattooing and headhunting were inextricably linked rituals. In Konyak society, the various tattoos worn by a person conveyed his or her status, position, stage of life, and achievements.

Tattoos defined the men's rites of passage from boyhood to manhood, as well as their victories in battle.

Remarkable study of what is obviously a rarely seen and presumably threatened piece of ethnic cultural life.
Wonderful how cheerfully your subjects engaged with you and through your image, with us once removed viewers.
Thanks for sharing, and hopefully there might be more from there?

Great job with the flash, getting all three in the beam without hitting the background. Excellent portrait,

Great shot!

Even at my age (close to half a century), I find these guys rather intimidating, despite their smiles!! Actually, I think their smiles make it worse!!

I spent some of my childhood living in a region close to Nagaland and heard stories about head hunters. In my teens, I looked back and thought they were just equivalent 'Bogey Man' tales that kids hear in the West. Then as an an adult, I discovered that the headhunters really did exist and they weren't just scare stories [*gulp*]!

Thanks for showing and looking forward to seeing more.
