I will try to produce 50 shots in each of three areas
- 'creative' (new-to-me techniques, etc., including video and multi-frame prints, and film (best of 1/3 keepers in the film challenge) - 'from this week' - a delve into the archive for photos taken in the current week, but already processed by me (and usually available on Flickr) - 'prime lens', new photos taken with primes. I'm not sure I can do 50 different lenses in the year (I don't even know if I have 50 lenses!), but I'll aim to produce something every week, the focus being on the photo rather than a lens review - Phil does that so well! I may not follow strict week numbers (especially with this late start) but I intend to keep up with the best of you in due course. |

Week 1
I have to do a little catch up so I am going to look at pictures posted in the first week of the year. A: Creative ![]() Cuckoo bokeh | A7 III | LA-VE1 | Minolta Vectis Reflex 400 F8 Strictly this was taken on the last day of 2021, but for me it falls in the scope of my 2022 Photo 150 challenge. Since I took this picture I may have broken the lens focusing electronics, but for now I enjoy the distinctive reflex lens bokeh. B: This week in ... 2021 ![]() Yellow | A7 III & FE ZA 24-70 F4 My first dip in the archives is from a year ago and this bit of near landscape on the edge of new housing not far from where I live. The yellow insulation on the power cables being picked up in the plants nearby. C: Prime lens ![]() Hole in the clouds | A7 III | LA-VE1 | Minolta Vectis Reflex 400 F8 On New Year's Day I was still trying out the Vectis 400 lens, and a hole in the clouds appeared at just the right time. Week 2
Catching up with this week too. A: Creative ![]() Surfer 2 | A7 III and FE ZA 24-70 I was in Porthcawl, on the Bristol Channel coast of South Wales and a couple of surfers were doing their turns off the main promenade. My problem was that I wasn't carrying my telephoto lens with me, so I switched to JPG and turned on the digital zoom to x4.0, or 280mm equivalent. So here's one ride on a wave to the inevitable end; 12 shots selected from more than double that in the original shoot. B: This week in ... 2019 ![]() Easy jet | A65 and DT 16-50mm F2.8 SSM It's early January and we went for a walk in the nature reserve on the Warburg Estate in the south of the county. I look up, and bingo. C: prime lens ![]() Magdalen shadows | Rollei 35 S w/ Rollei-HFT Tessar 2.8/40mm It's cheating a little bit to use an off brand camera with a fixed lens, but Rolleis are eligible for the film challenge, and this one has a fixed focal length lens. I was testing it before it goes on sale in a local charity shop. It's a pricey item but still delivers the goods. The draweback here is the 12-year-expired film, Kodak Color Plus. |

Bravo Howard
![]() I shall follow your journey with interest, especially from your archives. When I attempted this challenge last year I realised that despite my LR catalogue holding over 6GB of images, very few of them are worthy of sharing. I didn't take photography up as a serious hobby until 2006 and everything before that was either low res digital pas and before that film pas to simply record holidays. So I envy those that have worthy back catalogues and marvel at how much I missed for the first 50 years ![]() |

Welcome aboard the challenge Howard!
From Week 1 the standout really seems to be the Hold in the Clouds (pic 3). The effect is quite striking. How did you find an adapter for the Vectis lenses? For Week 2, my favourite has to be the collage of the surfer. It's a great subject for this style. |

Thank you both for your comments - much appreciated.
@Wētāpunga The adapter is produced in China by a business that now calls itself Monster - they do an adaptation for the LA-EA4 adapter, and a couple of adapters for Nikon and Pentax lenses. They started with this Vectis project; while I missed out on the first offering of a half-dozen or so adapters )@neilt3 secured one as I recall); when another batch was made I ordered one. I had some nerves when the delivery hit the realities of Covid and Brexit, the adapter was delivered about a year ago. I got the Vectis 400 lens more recently, but I may have done something to the electronics near the baffle at the rear, which I'll be looking into when I feel more confident. If you are interested in the adapter they may yet resume manufacture; @woodrim in the mirrorless lenses themed view thread is in touch with the makers. @bonnevile / Brian - I'm not planning to go very often in to the deep back catalogue, but in 50 weeks I can sample say the last 5 years tentimes at different times of the year. Fingers crossed! |

Week 3
A: Creative ![]() Clouds over the Channel /1 | A7 III + LA-EA4 + Tamron SP 70-300 USD This was taken last weekend on a walk near Birling Gap in Sussex; it's a 5-frame HDR (+/- 2EV), merged in Lightroom, and coverted to B&W using the Adobe Monochrome profile. It's part of a series that I hope to post in Open Views soon. B: This week in ... 2018 ![]() Old High Street telephone box Three years ago I got a Lomo'Instant Square camera and so I went out and snapped our neighbourhood telephone box. I'll cross-post this to the telephone box themed view thread. C: prime lens ![]() Seven Sisters from Birling Gap This is a full-frame, 4000x4000 crop from the original photo. I used a Sony 28mm F2 lens, which is going to get a lot more use since I dropped the big 24-70 F4 ![]() |

Week 3 Comments-
Looks like you’re doing well to catch up after your delayed start to the challenge. The HDR clouds shot is a good balanced composition and the HDR approach has certainly created a a good exposure. I like the sense of the parallel lines running through the shot ![]() The 2018 shot is also a striking image, and at first glance I thought it was a black-and-white image with a red colour popping style! ![]() I liked your shot 3 the most however, as the leading line produced from the curving cliffs gave it an effective sense of depth ![]() And of course condolences on the damage to the 24-70/4. What a heart wrenching breakage… ![]() |

Thank you so much.
Seven Sisters is the name for the cliffs along this part of the coast, forming seven hills and dry valleys in between. There's another view from the west which helps better identify the cliff tops ![]() Seven Sisters from Seaford Head Seaford Head is shrouded in mist in my mono photo, and Birling Gap is the last low point in the east-looking photo. It's a popular location for films and according to Wikipedia, 'The Seven Sisters are seen in the background of the Quidditch World Cup in 2005 film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.' |

All good photo's Howard, I look forward to your series near Birling Gap, the appetizer tasted very well
![]() And the seven sisters bring back good memories from a bicycle vacation we took in 1977 and we passed by there. Some of the slopes were tough to take with our loaded bikes, but the scenery made it all worthwhile. |

Thank you, Pieter. I ended up putting the shots into different themed views; I hope you caught some of them. It's a lovely part of England, and I'm fortunate to have friends I can visit who live that way.

Moving on to Week 4
A: Creative I thought I'd let the creativity be on the other side of the camera ![]() Ballaké Sissoko, Abel Selaocoe, Vincent Ségal | NEX-7 and E PZ 16-50 | 1/25s, F8, ISO1600 At the Roundhouse, London. The creativity on my side of the camera was to use so-called Precision Digital Zoom to fill the frame, which meant shooting in JPG, leaving much of the heavy lifting to the camera. I used a manual exposure setting and DMF to help get the focus into place. F8 gave me some more DOF and 1/25s was helped with the OSS of the lens. |

B: This week in ... 2017
Each week I'll move back a year until I have no photos in my Flickr stream and then I'll move forward again. So, in 2017 I did a day trip to Welney Wetlands Centre, in Norfolk and roughly half-way between Cambridge and King's Lynn. ![]() Welney wetlands | A7 and Minolta AF 24-85 I love empty landscapes, and this reminds me so much of West-Friesland in North Holland, though it's arguably emptier. Anyway, restrictions are lighter in both the UK and NL and I can see the possibility of making a visit or two to NL in the coming months - can't wait ![]() |
