Photo 150 "2022" - Howard_S

I will try to produce 50 shots in each of three areas

- 'creative' (new-to-me techniques, etc., including video and multi-frame prints, and film (best of 1/3 keepers in the film challenge)
- 'from this week' - a delve into the archive for photos taken in the current week, but already processed by me (and usually available on Flickr)
- 'prime lens', new photos taken with primes. I'm not sure I can do 50 different lenses in the year (I don't even know if I have 50 lenses!), but I'll aim to produce something every week, the focus being on the photo rather than a lens review - Phil does that so well!

I may not follow strict week numbers (especially with this late start) but I intend to keep up with the best of you in due course.

A: Creative


Surfer 2 | A7 III and FE ZA 24-70

I was in Porthcawl, on the Bristol Channel coast of South Wales and a couple of surfers were doing their turns off the main promenade. My problem was that I wasn't carrying my telephoto lens with me, so I switched to JPG and turned on the digital zoom to x4.0, or 280mm equivalent. So here's one ride on a wave to the inevitable end; 12 shots selected from more than double that in the original shoot.

Easy jet | A65 and DT 16-50mm F2.8 SSM
It's early January and we went for a walk in the nature reserve on the Warburg Estate in the south of the county. I look up, and bingo.

C: prime lens


Magdalen shadows | Rollei 35 S w/ Rollei-HFT Tessar 2.8/40mm

It's cheating a little bit to use an off brand camera with a fixed lens, but Rolleis are eligible for the film challenge, and this one has a fixed focal length lens. I was testing it before it goes on sale in a local charity shop. It's a pricey item but still delivers the goods. The draweback here is the 12-year-expired film, Kodak Color Plus.

I shall follow your journey with interest, especially from your archives. When I attempted this challenge last year I realised that despite my LR catalogue holding over 6GB of images, very few of them are worthy of sharing. I didn't take photography up as a serious hobby until 2006 and everything before that was either low res digital pas and before that film pas to simply record holidays. So I envy those that have worthy back catalogues and marvel at how much I missed for the first 50 years

@Wētāpunga The adapter is produced in China by a business that now calls itself Monster - they do an adaptation for the LA-EA4 adapter, and a couple of adapters for Nikon and Pentax lenses. They started with this Vectis project; while I missed out on the first offering of a half-dozen or so adapters )@neilt3 secured one as I recall); when another batch was made I ordered one. I had some nerves when the delivery hit the realities of Covid and Brexit, the adapter was delivered about a year ago. I got the Vectis 400 lens more recently, but I may have done something to the electronics near the baffle at the rear, which I'll be looking into when I feel more confident. If you are interested in the adapter they may yet resume manufacture; @woodrim in the mirrorless lenses themed view thread is in touch with the makers.

@bonnevile / Brian - I'm not planning to go very often in to the deep back catalogue, but in 50 weeks I can sample say the last 5 years tentimes at different times of the year. Fingers crossed!

Week 3 Comments-
Looks like you’re doing well to catch up after your delayed start to the challenge.
The HDR clouds shot is a good balanced composition and the HDR approach has certainly created a a good exposure. I like the sense of the parallel lines running through the shot
The 2018 shot is also a striking image, and at first glance I thought it was a black-and-white image with a red colour popping style!
I liked your shot 3 the most however, as the leading line produced from the curving cliffs gave it an effective sense of depth . What exactly is the ‘Seven sisters’?

And of course condolences on the damage to the 24-70/4. What a heart wrenching breakage…

All good photo's Howard, I look forward to your series near Birling Gap, the appetizer tasted very well .

And the seven sisters bring back good memories from a bicycle vacation we took in 1977 and we passed by there. Some of the slopes were tough to take with our loaded bikes, but the scenery made it all worthwhile.

I thought I'd let the creativity be on the other side of the camera


Ballaké Sissoko, Abel Selaocoe, Vincent Ségal | NEX-7 and E PZ 16-50 | 1/25s, F8, ISO1600

At the Roundhouse, London. The creativity on my side of the camera was to use so-called Precision Digital Zoom to fill the frame, which meant shooting in JPG, leaving much of the heavy lifting to the camera. I used a manual exposure setting and DMF to help get the focus into place. F8 gave me some more DOF and 1/25s was helped with the OSS of the lens.
