Thank you, Pieter and Kai, for your comments. I was surprised and honoured that the Gaia photo was POTW in week #787; surprised because it was the Sony App that made it possible, using a rotate function, an easy in-camera 'cheat' that allows you to preview results as you go along.

Since then I have been on a 2-week holiday to France and I didn't take as many photos as I expected, and I'm going to have to delve in to some Smartphone pics to complete my categories. At least there's a Sony sensor in there somewhere (I think).

Week 27

A: Creative

Edge of the forest | A7 III and FE 24-70mm F4 ZA OSS | f/8.0 33.0 mm | 1/160 s | ISO 800

We were staying in a small village in Haute-Loire and on a walk around the place we came close to a managed forest. There is a presumed boundary between the trees and the road, but the forest seemed to have more of a presence and appeared to be edging closer to the road. A crop to ultra-wide aspect 64:27 gives a cinematic feel to the image, making the presence more tangible, I feel.

Brenizer oak | A900 and 85mm F2.8 SAM | photomerge of 11 frames

This week last year I was experimenting with the Brenizer effect, where a number of frames are merged together to give an effect similar to using a shorter lens on a medium- or large-format camera.

Motorway services for horses | OnePlus 7T | unknown lens | f/2.2 | 6.3 mm | 1/1400s | ISO 100

Driving across France, somewhere in the Loire, I couldn't resist snapping this driver giving his precious cargo a break at an aire de repos. The whole story is there.

Good to see you back here Howard. The first indeed looks "cinematic" allthough I wouldn't mind a little extra room at the bottom edge.

The Brenizer effect came out very nice, very shallow dof like a LF image. I only find 11 frames an odd number, I would have expected 9 or 12 (3x3 or 3x4) or maybe even 10 (2x5) but 11 looks strange.

The photo at the aire de repos is indeed a story in itself, apparently a caring owner for his beautiful horse.

Thanks, Pieter. I have looked at my source files and I can see 11 RAW files that were selected for the photomerge. It was almost certainly a set of hand-held shots and, looking at the draft photomerge and format of the finished picture, I have a solid 3x3 core, probably with some overlaps here and there. I wasn't disciplined enough to use a tripod with a methodical set of 4x3 or 3x3 originals, rather I left it to postprocessing to select the final image (approx. 9500x8500 px).

Hi Howard, I really like that Brenzier shot, and am impressed you achieved it hand held. Also, welcome back to the Challenge

Week 28

A: Creative

Ukrainian Camargue | A7 III and FE 24-70mm F4 ZA OSS | f/10.0 | 25.0 mm | 1/400 s | ISO 100

A simple idea - which many of us have done over the last few months - to abstract the Ukrainian colours from the scenes around us. This was looking over the Etang de Vaccares, south of Arles in the midday heat.

B: This week in 2020

Uffington fakery | A7 III and Sigma 70mm F2.8 DG MACRO | Art 018 | f/10.0 | 1/200 s | ISO 100 | and Photoshop Camera

The Photoshop Camera app on my Smartphone offers all kinds of templates for playing around with source images. In the summer of 2020 people were released from Lockdown so places like Uffington White Horse were swarming with people. Also, I'm pretty sure the Milky Way is in that segment of the sky though of course not visible in the middle of the afternoon. If you're interested the source picture is linked in the comments on my Flickr page for this photo.

Camargue | A7 III and Minolta AF 500mm Reflex F8 | 1/500 s | ISO 320

From a viewing platform towards the Etang de Vaccares in the Camargue, some horses presumably getting respite from the heat. Cropped to 64:27, but still full-frame width.

Good set of shots there Howard

The explanation of your Creative shot helped, as once I realised it was mimicking Ukraine's flag, what you were trying to do became obvious. I liked it.

The shot with the Milky Way is effective. Did not realise at first it was the result of an app on your phone. The things they can do now...

Also liked the horses in Camargue. Good to see the Minolta 500/8 getting some use. I guess it makes a good travel lens given its weight and size. Did you manually focus the shot?

I like the Camargue shot, minimalistic but quite impactful.

The milky way is nicely done, glad you told us it's not done all in one shot

Smart horses, cooling down in the swamp and high grass.

Thank you, both - appreciated as ever.

Re the lens, Kai, yes the 500 F8 is great for carrying around and can be quite sharp. I'm pretty sure I used manual focus for this one as the grass the horses were standing in was probably throwing the focus point off. I have looked in the EXIF but I don't think the focus setting is recorded there.
