These modern fortifications (C20 mostly) always come as a surprise to me as I don't think Britain ever prepared defences on that scale (apart perhaps from sea forts looking at France and beyond). So they're not part of what I think might be lying around in the landscape.

Your architecture shots this week are excellent Pieter. I guess one of the advantages of military structures is they are (often) designed to blend in with the landscape.

The onion shot is also well done- I'm impressed you can hold the camera steady enough for Helicon Focus to work its stacking magic.

Geologically this is a very interesting area, formed about 500 million years ago when the tectonic plates of the earth crust of what now is North America and Africa collided and pushed a piece of the underlying earth mantle to the surface. The light brown rocks are serpentine and have a very high metal content which is poisonous for most plants, hence the very scarce growth, only a very limited number of plants can survive there. Pushing the earth mantle to the surface over the crust/tectonic plates only happened at four places, and this one is the only one which is relatively easily accessible. Also interesting is that when such a rock breaks the interior is dark green, over time water and air oxidise it to this brownish state. It's a big area, spot the two walkers in the distance to get a sense of the scale of this landscape.

Azaleas, we were pretty early in the season but managed to see some of these coming to bloom in the last week of our visit to Newfoundland

Thanks Wētāpunga, we had a very good time, allthough the weather didn't always coöperate, but fortunately we were prepared for that (clothes wise)

Expect many more Newfoundland images in the coming weeks, I took over 2000 and the Tamron 150-500 got me some great shots of birds and other animals. What I wasn't prepared for however is how much air fluctuations can spoil the sharpness of an image of subjects far away when using such a long lens. I've for instance some distant fishingboats or far away lighthouses on a cape that look like they have been taken through a hot chimney exhaust . Nothing the lens can do anything about but still a new phenomena for me.

The real meaning of Rerum Novarum can be read here, but it also became the name of almost every pub operated by the Catholic trade unions.
It's now a pop-up exhibition space where we went today to view the works of three photographers (or digital artists) and one sculptur
