These modern fortifications (C20 mostly) always come as a surprise to me as I don't think Britain ever prepared defences on that scale (apart perhaps from sea forts looking at France and beyond). So they're not part of what I think might be lying around in the landscape.
I look forward to results from your trip to Newfoundland! |

Thanks Howard.
I think Britain as an island had less to fear from troops marching onto their territory so the difference is understandable. The brick forts (like the architecture picture) is C19 (~1860) and while they never actually were engaged in combat clearly served a purpose. There are several documents from both sides of the French-German war (1870/1871) that talk about trying to attack the other party in the back through Belgium but the strong defenses around Antwerp, Liege and Namen deterred both of them to actually execute such a plan. The anti tank canal was built in the 1930's and really didn't do any real service in WW2. War technology at that time was so much advanced that a simple ditch didn't stop the Germans from occupying Belgium. |

Your architecture shots this week are excellent Pieter. I guess one of the advantages of military structures is they are (often) designed to blend in with the landscape.
The onion shot is also well done- I'm impressed you can hold the camera steady enough for Helicon Focus to work its stacking magic. |

And yes, Helicon focus stacking of handheld shots is not obvious and involves a bit of trickery. I've only done it with 2 or max. 3 shots where I wanted just a tad more dof without making the background more detailed. The way I do it is frame a tiny bit wider (~5%) and then crop the two or three images and in lightroom then play with x-shift/y-shift/scale to make all two or three images align is good as possible. When you have them as close as possible then Helicon focus can handle the rest. But for serious focus stacking of many shots (I sometimes have more than 20) a tripod and macro rail is absolutely needed. |

Week 22 - Architecture
The lighthouse of Cape Bonavista (Newfoundland), which has the lightkeepers house built around the light tower and is fully restored back to the condition of 1870 (inside and out). It can still work with the old petroleum lamps and concave mirrors, allthough the official function is taken over by the small lamp on the pylon that sticks up behind it. ![]() Week 22 - Landscape Looking through a ravine at a black beach and incoming waves ![]() Week 22 - Macro/Closeup A squirrel along the trail that was more concentrated on eating a pinecone than two lone walkers on the trail, until it suddenly noticed us and was gone in a split second, but not before we were able to take a few pictures ![]() All A7ii + Tamron FE 28-200 Di III RXD |

Week 23 - Architecture
The lighthouse at Cape Anguille (The most westerly point of Newfoundland) just after sunset ![]() Week 23 - Landscape Tablelands in the Gros Morne national park ![]() Geologically this is a very interesting area, formed about 500 million years ago when the tectonic plates of the earth crust of what now is North America and Africa collided and pushed a piece of the underlying earth mantle to the surface. The light brown rocks are serpentine and have a very high metal content which is poisonous for most plants, hence the very scarce growth, only a very limited number of plants can survive there. Pushing the earth mantle to the surface over the crust/tectonic plates only happened at four places, and this one is the only one which is relatively easily accessible. Also interesting is that when such a rock breaks the interior is dark green, over time water and air oxidise it to this brownish state. It's a big area, spot the two walkers in the distance to get a sense of the scale of this landscape. Week 23 - Macro/Closeup Azaleas, we were pretty early in the season but managed to see some of these coming to bloom in the last week of our visit to Newfoundland ![]() Architecture: A7Rii + Tamron FE 150-500 Di III VC VXD Landscape & closeup: A7ii + Tamron FE 28-200 Di III RXD |

Good to see you back Pieter, and your collection of photos.
I hope the Tamron 150-500 met your expectations. I really liked that Tablelands shot (Week 23) and the background story. Very interesting. Great catch of the squirrel also. The Jellybean houses and the gannet colony are also interesting images. The fishing nets and the lighthouse at Cape Bonavista are also nicely done compositions. Looks like you had a good time on your trip. |

Thanks Wētāpunga, we had a very good time, allthough the weather didn't always coöperate, but fortunately we were prepared for that (clothes wise)
Expect many more Newfoundland images in the coming weeks, I took over 2000 ![]() ![]() |

Oh my, 2000 pics. I can see you'll be busy. Looking forward to seeing more of your shots.
Appreciate the atmosphere issue. When I was photographing stuff up in the NT of Australia I basically stopped shooting between 11am in the morning and 3pm in afternoon. There was just too much heat haze to get anything worth while |
