Week 30: July 25 to August 1
I managed to finish work earlier enough on Friday to make it to Muriwai. I thought I'd packed a set of my 21mm, 50mm and 110mm (I like to take 3 lenses as a rule of thumb, each of which roughly doubles the focal length of the previous). But well, the 35mm and 50mm Loxia are practically identical in size and hood, so I did grab the 35mm out of the lens cabinet instead. I was hoping the sunset would deliver something spectacular (it didn't), but before then, I took some other photos. This was with the a7Riii and Zeiss Loxia 21/2.8mm, with an ND64 (6-stop) filter. #2 Pic 93 Muriwai Beach (scenic shot) ![]() EDIT And to finish this week's collection off, waves crashing on rocks at Te Henga. This qualified as my telephoto shot because I used the Voigtlander 110/2 for this image. #3 (Pic 94) Crashing Wave (telephoto theme) ![]() On to the next week ![]() Edited by Wētāpunga - 31 July 2022 at 09:30 |

Nice one of the Lily again this week Kai, inspires me to also try focus stacking today
![]() Pictures 2 and 3 both are very dynamic but very different. I like them both! |

After embarrassing myself in the Landscapes and Seascapes thread I am pleased to see my preferred coastal shot here as well - there's nice movement in the water coming off the rocks. I like the wave smashing over them too, and indeed the focus-stacked lilly. Good results for this week!

Thanks Pieter, the focus stacking is a good standby for me if the weather is too wet (or too sunny) for a trip to a local beach. And Helicon Focus 8 is very good at it. The Muriwai beach shot is the one I like the most from this week. The wave at Te Henga was very dramatic. I'm basically standing behind those rocks which overhang the sea. The wave was still able to send water soaring above my head.
And no worries Howard, once I figured out what kind of image I liked I ended up with two that were similar. I can see why they were confused at first glance. I like to get the water flowing over rocks in a way that evokes the waterfall photos I used to photograph. |

Thanks @waldo_posth - but I think it was more luck than creativity! Albeit I did like the way the sun back lit the water the moment the wave crashed into the rock.

Week 31: August 1 to August 8
Anyway, the creative shot this week is also from Muriwai Beach. An early evening shot with my a7Riii, Zeiss Loxia 50/2 and an ND64 filter. As a frustrated waterfall photographer, I try to look for movement of the waves, rocks and steps that give similar effects of flowing water with depth into the shot. I don't find however, that waves benefit from a very long exposure time, and often the best effect ois at between 1/5 and 1/3 sec. This scene seemed to bring a lot of those elements together. Especially with the little rock pools. #1 (Pic 95) Rocks at Muriwai ![]() The second shot is my creative (long exposure shot). It's part of my conversion of all my old Lightroom Catalogues to Capture One. So one thing I've been doing is reprocessing some of my older shots. This one is from my 2016 catalog. #2 (Pic 96) Pohuehue Stream ![]() This was taken with my a7R with a Minolta 17035.3.5 G lens, at 20mm. And Lee filters to create a long exposure effect. This time round I did a slight crop of the shot, added a vignette and used the C1 colour and exposure tools to craft something. For comparison purposes, the original 2016 photo is below ![]() I think I've improved it. |

Waterfall images are tricky, IMO. I think you have to consider the amount of water falling (I am serious!). In the upper part water is coming down the steps and it is almost transparent. At the bottom the currents join and there is massive spray. Using a very long exposure to capture it leads to a loss of almost any structure. What you say about the waves also applies to the waterfall, IMO - a "short(er)" long exposure might be the most effective approach.
Just my 2c. The new processing is much better, though. |

Thanks @waldo_posth
To conclude this week, I took this shot with the a7Riii and Zeiss Basis 135mm. at Muriwai. It's a juvenile kekeno (NZ fur seal) taking a rest. about an hour later it was sitting up, looking alert. #3 (Pic 98) Juvenile kekeno (telephoto theme) ![]() Edited by Wētāpunga - 07 August 2022 at 00:10 |

I think your new version of the waterfall is a vast improvement, the darker PP fits the theme of a waterfall in a forest much better, I found the first too light.
And there's always a trade off in shutter speed, personally I'd like to see more water detail but I know for some others this one isn't even milky enough. I don't think there's a right or wrong, just different tastes. The juvenile kekeno is lovely, you would almost think it's in some kind of trouble but fortunately your story tells the opposite. |

Thanks for the feedback Pieter
I now have the urge to go back and revisit a lot of my old photos with C1. Deciding on the shutter speed for streams and waterfalls is as you say, tricky, and there is a strong element of personal taste. I think back in 2016 I had a greater preference for a more blurred effect, whereas now I like to have a bit more structure. I did examine the photos I took of the kekeno at 100%, for any signs of ill health, as that is the only reason rangers have for intervening. It seemed basically to be dozing, and opened one eye to watch what I was doing. |

Week 32: August 9 to August 15
I'm trying to get out to Muriwai more regularly at the moment. The advantage of the beach (about 40km from where I live) is you can park very close to the beach. Hence, the walk to the takapu or the rocks and surf is short. Te Henga is still my preferred beach, but that usually takes a 40 minute hike from the car park, in addition to the 40km drive. It's too much to squeeze in at the end of the day. Anyway, I'm back there with the a7Riii and Zeiss Loxia 21mm. And that produces the first of my shots for this week. #1 (Pic 99) Motutara Island (scenic theme) ![]() |

I find the sea shots more interesting myself and both 31/1 and 32/1 have a lot of structure showing lines of force as the waves move through the seascape. The lines from the cliff edge to the rocky outcrop are especially dynamic in 32/1.
