Week 40 Theme 1: Peru trip, May 2013

Date Taken: 2013-05-21 13:09:50 | Camera Model: NEX-7 | Lens: E 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 OSS | Focal Length: 55 mm | Mode: Program AE | Aperture: f/8.0 | Exposure Time: 0.008 sec (1/125) | ISO: 100 | 35mm Equivalent: 82 mm

I'm still on May 21st and making my way to Machu Picchu, and not there yet. Our next stop (which will come next time) is Ollantaytambo, a small village in the Sacred Valley of south Peru, set on the Urubamba River. This (to me) remarkable flower was hanging around in some gardens near our hotel, I think.

The Men's Tour of Britain passed through Rame Cross in Cornwall on its first day and it was quite a sight to see the main peloton in full flow.

A final photo from May 21st: Ollantaytambo is a village in the Sacred Valley of south Peru, set on the Urubamba River amid snow-capped mountains. It's known for the Ollantaytambo ruins, a massive Inca fortress with large stone terraces on a hillside. Here you can see them in the shadow of the mountains opposite.

This week I'm using one of the Peru shots for the ultrawide aspect ratio challenge, a closer view of the ruins at Ollantaytambo. You can just make out a couple of figures next to the end walls for a sense of scale.

Upton House and Gardens

A stitch of 7 vertical and 5 landscape photographs at 24 mm - using Merge to Panorama in Photoshop, Auto setting with Content Aware Fill.

So the machine gets its own idea of how to put things together, and I rather like the result. The house and gardens are the home of one of the early C20 leaders of the Shell oil company. It's set on the side of a valley and these massive trees dominate this part of the garden, on the edge of a slope down to a pond.

Straightened out and merged to a sperical projection the picture becomes more mundane:

Day 11: Machu Picchu overview
Date Taken: 2013-05-22 16:09:36 | Camera Model: NEX-7 | Lens: E 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 OSS | Focal Length: 18 mm | Mode: Program AE | Aperture: f/5.6 | Exposure Time: 0.008 sec (1/125) | ISO: 100 | 35mm Equivalent: 27 mm | Location: Machupicchu, Cusco, Peru | Latitude/Longitude: -13.163387, -72.544973

Finally, we get to the great site. A year earlier we had to abandon our trip on the day we would have set out for Machu Picchu, and now at last we have arrived there.

I posted a similar shot direct from Peru in 2013 (here), but this shows better the buildings and terraces below this viewpoint.

I'll be doing an Open View thread for the other photos I have selected from this day - I just need to get them down to a manageable number!

Looking up over agricultural terraces
Date Taken: 2013-05-22 12:16:21 | Camera Model: NEX-7 | Lens: E 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 OSS | Focal Length: 48 mm | Mode: Program AE | Aperture: f/9.0 | Exposure Time: 0.01 sec (1/100) | ISO: 100 | 35mm Equivalent: 72 mm | Location: Machupicchu, Cusco, Peru | Latitude/Longitude: -13.163387, -72.544973

Of course, one thing I can do this week is submit photos from Peru in all three threads, and here in the ultrawide aspect ratio thread I have selected and cropped a photo looking up over the agricultural terraces at Machi Picchu.

That feeling on top of the world
Date Taken: 2013-05-22 16:13:35 | Camera Model: NEX-7 | Lens: E 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 OSS | Focal Length: 18 mm | Mode: Program AE | Aperture: f/7.1 | Exposure Time: 0.005 sec (1/200) | ISO: 100 | 35mm Equivalent: 27 mm | Location: Machupicchu, Cusco, Peru | Latitude/Longitude: -13.163387, -72.544973

I was pleased to come across this in the archive of our visit to Machu Picchu. I don't know this person, she wasn't part of our party being guided around, but I feel it does capture that feeling when you get somewhere you have dreamed of getting to after so long.

Day 12 Machu Picchu llama
Date Taken: 2013-05-23 12:08:13 | Camera Model: NEX-7 | Lens: E 55-210mm F4.5-6.3 OSS | Focal Length: 55 mm | Mode: Program AE | Aperture: f/6.3 | Exposure Time: 0.005 sec (1/200) | ISO: 100 | 35mm Equivalent: 82 mm

Well, we stayed at Machu Picchu overnight and took the second day to explore the ruins self-guided. I'm a softie for llamas, who seem to have the same job as sheep on some British monuments - keeping the grass short.

I'll use the Peru trip and Machu Picchu to provide my ultra-wide aspect ratio shot this week - cropped from two shots stitched together.

Amal meets Alice in Oxford
Date Taken: 2021-10-26 14:16:24 | Camera Model: NEX-7 | Lens: E PZ 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OSS | Focal Length: 50 mm | Mode: Program AE | Aperture: f/6.3 | Exposure Time: 0.013 sec (1/80) | ISO: 100 | 35mm Equivalent: 75 mm

Alice is not in this photo, but a puppet depicting a young Syrian refugee has been tracing the footsteps of refugees over the last year, from Gaziantep near the Turkey-Syria border to Manchester in the UK (on Wednesday). In Oxford the Story Museum arranged for Amal to meet Alice and enthusiastic crowds.
