After much thought and no little trepidation my themes will be:
Lens extravaganza A different Minolta AF lens every week (apart from April Foolishness and Oktoberfest when I will conform with the two lens restriction of those challenges). I have counted and find I have 58 different lenses or variants, so I won't even have to use the ones with sticky irises (though I might). Landscape I am much more comfortable shooting in an urban environment even though I love the countryside My aim is to get my eye in for a good shot without people or buildings. Try something creative I keep meaning to experiment with new techniques or revisit those I rarely attempt, but almost never get around to it. So a year of going beyond shoot, crop and move a few LR sliders. I may be setting myself up for a total fail here! I love the idea of a lens extravaganza!
Also keen to see what new ideas you come up with. |

I feel almost obliged to do my 64:27 (21:9-ish) with just one lens now
![]() Do we get to see a photo of the unused 14-ish lenses on 31-Dec next year? |

I did contemplate a product shot instead of the landscape - to show the lens of the week, but I'd probably end up doing 56 shots in week one so as to not have to set up the lighting over and over. I spent this evening's dog walk pondering on how to select which lens to use each week. I don't want to use up all my favourites before summer arrives. Outside of the April, July & October prime challenges (which, assuming they follow the format of recent years, will use up 8 primes and 12 weeks) I am minded to do a week with a cheap kit lens, one week with a cheap tele-zoom, next a week with a prime, and a week with a better zoom. Minor problem is a slight shortage of primes - perhaps I need to acquire a few more. Or use zoom ends for a couple of weeks in July? And I have to keep a 50 in reserve for Week 50. Decisions, decisions. I shall start with everyone's favourite - the 35-80 F4-5.6. This is the only Minolta lens to score less than 3 in the Dyxum ratings. Is it really that bad? I see I haven't reviewed it yet, at least I will be able to do that even if I don't get any nice sharp photos. I don't think I'll be using it for the landscape shot - though it might do for an attempt at the Orton effect. |

Took the 35-80 out on my dog walk yesterday - it really is impressively bad. Also useless for the Orton effect, I had forgotten it didn't have manual focus.

I think I got one with a Dynax 5 I bought 2nd hand. And yeah, it was bad. Nothing I could do could get a good image out of it. |

A good image? That is, of course the challenge - but I'll settle for something that isn't embarrassingly bad. Howard went for Week 0 - who am I to disagree. However Howard covered all three themes in one, I can't do that as my lens a week criteria doesn't work that way. So I have gone to the archive and here is a non-Minolta lens, non-landscape, straightforward PP image that has not been shot in the week - I'm starting by ignoring all my themes. ![]() A99ii/Sigma 12-24mm HSM |

Set out as you mean to go on!
I have that much maligned 35-80 lens and got some half-decent results, sometimes. I'll have to dig it out again for one of my vintage digital shots - perhaps pairing it with the A100. It might be pushing it too much to get it to work to the full frame it was 'designed' for. |

Good idea - I might try it with my KM5D, it certainly doesn't complement the A99ii.

Okay here I go:
Week 1, Theme 1 - Lens Extravaganza - Minolta AF 35-80mm f4-5.6 Big Pooch ![]() Konica Minolta 5D + Minolta AF 35-80mm f4-5.6 @ 45mm. ISO 640, f4.5 1/100s Following Howard's advice I tried an old camera and also decided to set it to Program (surely the mode this lens was designed for). The result is not so bad. I'm pleased it worked, though the dog looks like it has seen grander cameras pointed at it before ;-)

Indeed, a great many times. The pocket rocket made a fair job of it back in July '19.
So they say. Given the number of times I've taken a shot with totally inappropriate settings from an earlier shot, I can't help thinking there is something in it. |
