Trying a PP technique Svjetlana used in the Any Kind of Blur thread. Needless to say she does it far better. Blur. ![]() Sony A99ii + Minolta AF 50mm f3.5. ISO 100, f9 1/8s Edited by Phil Wood - 03 February 2021 at 22:38 |

It certainly shouldn't be confused with reality. |

Week 6 - Theme 1 - Lens Extravaganza.
I decided to continue working thrpugh Minolta's less impressive offerings. This week's lens is the Minolta AF 70-710mm f4.5-5.6 II from 1999, which has the dubious distinction of have the second lowest rating from Dyxum reviewers (3.2/5). This was the 4th and last lens of this zoom range that Minolta produced, which is probably just as well since each new version was distinctly inferior to its predecessor. However. it's nothing like as bad as the 35-80mm shutter cap lens that keeps it off bottom spot - I suspect that, in the days of film, it fitted reasonably well into the product range as a cut-price second lens for buyers of the bottom of the range camera models. Trying it today on an A99ii is pushing it to its limits, but it's not difficult to get okay images from it. Center sharpness is reasonable, corners pretty mushy, it's nice and light thanks to its unimpressive plastic construction. The attraction is its very low price, its weakness is that the earlier models are also dirt cheap - and better. Grafitti - Rebel. ![]() Sony A99ii + Minolta AF 70-210mm f4.5-5.6 II @ 120mm. Another attempt at Svjetlana's PP technique. This time a less confusing backgroun, I think it's better, others may disagree! Blur II. ![]() Sony A99ii + Sony 85mm f2.8. ISO 100, f4.5 1/125s |

Very successful blurry background Phil. I like it. I also like "Tree & hedge" image.

Week 7 - Theme 1 - Lens Extravaganza.
This week it's another of the four lenses Minolta produced with the II nomenclature - indicting a new optical design with the same basic specs (FL and aperture range). This one. the Minolta AF 28-80mm f3.5-5.6 II, is from 1997 - a basic kit lens, cheaply made, but plenty of copies have survived the intervening years, so they weren't that badly built. Performance is best described as 'okay' - well up to the needs of a basic film camera - it was never intended for the serious amateur, let alone a pro. On an A99ii it produces reasonable images, but there are plenty better lenses to choose from. This lens may be available for £10, but, if you have a full frame A-mount camera it really deserves better. Nevertheless, I quite enjoyed using the lens, AF was quick, MFD is good and it's so light. The view from the bridge. ![]() Sony A99ii + Minolta AF 28-80mm f3.5-5.6 II @ 50mm. ISO 500, f7.1 1/200s Edited by Phil Wood - 23 February 2021 at 00:51 |

Week 7 - Theme 3 - Try Something Creative.
Back to long exposures. I decided to try out a newly acquired variable ND filter - my first experience of one of these. It was a little disconcerting to see what it looked like with a wide aperture. Still, with the lens stopped down it seems to do what it's supposed to. However, the result did surprise me in one way- passing folk appear as if they were double exposures rather than the smoother blur I expected (of their torsos at least). Passing van. ![]() Sony A99ii + Sony 35mm f2 + K&F ND2-ND400 filter. ISO 100, f22 2s (cropped) |
