Thanks @onsplekkie. It's a new area for me to explore and I think it has potential for quite a few different style shots this year. |

Week 3 (#2 the Macro)
This is a somewhat unplanned shot as I did not expect a NZ Giant Dragonfly (Uropetala carovei () to turn up in the garden. It's Maori name is kapokapowai. ![]() a7Riii with Voigtlander 110mm macro. I didn't quite get the closest eye in focus but the thorax and rest of the head is very detailed. This species is usually about 90mm long but this male was 110-120mm. |

"Something Creative" lovely shot!
"Motutara Island" I really like how the Voigtlander 15/4.5 renders shots like this. Great B&W! |

Week 4 (The Wide angle)
Auckland's West Coast ![]() a7Riii with Zeiss Loxia 35/2, ISO800, 1/5000s at f10. This is looking south toward O'Neill's Bay, Te Henga, then Piha/KareKare and on the horizon, the white caps indicate the entrance to the Manukau Harbour. Extremely windy conditions with wild gusts where we were standing, so I went for a very short shutter speed. Fwiw, the black sand in the beaches is the cumulative erosion and deposits of ancient volcanic eruptions further south. Edited by Wētāpunga - 24 January 2021 at 23:12 |

The Voigtlander 15 I think, is turning into one of my favourite lenses for these ultrawide seascapes and landscapes. It's a nice compact size and the images, just look nice straight of of the camera. Negligible barrel distortion, pretty sharp across the whole frame (even those pesky corners) and as you note, the rendering is appealing. If you're not bothered by manual focus and small aperture, it's got to be one of the best ultra-wide options we have. |

Super atmosphere in the Auckland West Coast shot, the slight haze really enhances the mood.
Two small comments, the horizon seems slightly curved as well as slightly tilted CCW. Probably fixing these in PP will help the shot. |

@pegelli - thanks, yes, I've looked at that horizon a lot and I'm also not sure its level.

Week 4 (Something novel)
I don't do a lot of selfies and haven't tried any with the a7Riii yet. So it's not that creative, but the setup (a7Riii, 85/1.8, phone as remote) was all new to me. So should count as something novel. ![]() a7Riii and Batis 85mm, f1.8, ISO200, 1/4000 sec +1 exposure bias |

A selfie at 1.8 with an 85mm ... that used to be very very very difficult.
Eye AF is a thing! We can 'just about' see your phone! Which I'm sure you could have cropped, but maybe left in there just because. I like it. |

Yeah I agree, it still ain't easy to get a good self portrait and not end up with a "selfie". Are we all grumpy old men here? :-)
Great shot! |

Week 4 - Macro
This I had to dig into the archive for, but this time round I used C1 to process the image. Cicada ![]() a900 with Tamron 90/2.8, 1/200 at f20!! (Flash was the Sony Macro twin flash, hence the highlihts in the eye) |

@dCap
Indeed, even with earlier cameras and lenses I wouldn't have dared shoot at f1.8 for a selfie. The face/eye detect algorithms built into Sony cameras now have really changed our options. I think it also vindicates my decison to get the Batis. That bokeh looks pretty good. Good spotting of the phone, I confess I didn't quite spot it but I do want to use this as a 5x4 crop, so a solution suggests itself. @eddyizm Nga mihi. I thought it seemed like a passable attempt. I found if I tried smiling too much it looked like a grimace. I suspect it is hard to stare into an empty space and produce a genuine smile. Much easier if there is a person to engage with. A slight smile seemed to work... |

When I had my Nikon D700 (dSLR not mirrorless) and the Voigtländer 40mm f2 (manual focus). I would shoot selfies in the studio, and sometimes at f2. No app on the phone. No flippy LCD.
Technique (since this was a dSLR) ... you could see through the lens (from the front of the camera) and see the tiny red single 'AF' point light up. Nikon dSLR would beep when focus was achieved (even in manual focus). Or if it didn't beep it would blink (can't quite remember). There was an indication I'm sure. And I would just rock in/out of focus and trigger remotely. The kidz today - they got it eazy! |
