@dredwerker, I like the big wave, great abstract picture. Would be out of my comfort zone as well, so well done.

Under the benches is just gross, do you have a version where the top of the front bottle is in focus and all the gunk (+bud) kind of disappears in the bokeh, I like this one, but that might also be a nice variation on the same theme.

Rosie - yay :) thnx and I promise to never post the underside of a tramp's bench again. I was going to do another puppy pic but I was worried that it was soft. Its a lot easier to get things sharper with a 50mm than it is with my kit lens - especially with a manual focus.

Pegelli -

I had this one which has the top of the first bottle in focus:

and this one but it didnt really meet 'getting closer' I thought

Last holiday in Belgium I was determined to make a great picture for this assignment, but did end up with 4 pictures (and 1 for assignment 4 but first I have to pass this one)

1
no mater what I am told something hanging on a cable, like the gondola from this cable train is never ever save. But for this picture, I did stand in the front of the gondola and had my camera almost against the window. (The white on the bottom is from the frame from the window)

iso 400, 70mm, f4,0, 1/100sec
2
This I like.. fire But I tried to get as close as I dared

iso 400, 28mm, f4,5, 1/200sec
3
Next stop.. inside a weir. Normally I would like to get more in the picture and would not think of making it like this.
But I like the result.

iso 1600, 50mm, f5,6, 1/5sec
4
This is a embarrassment... after making some pictures in a nice church, making pictures of a boring door handle. And forgetting that the camera was on high iso, manual focus en manual settings. It took me around 20 shots before I did get a reasonable result. With the others waiting for me wile I was making this picture.

Iso 400, 24mm, f2,8, 1/4sec

Hi spook, good to see you here and glad you took the challenge of starting the assignments.

I think 2 and 3 are getting there for the assignment but not quite yet. 4 (your actual shot) is a bit too soft and boring to be a real challenge and there are some random distractions around the edge of the frame that in my mind don't make it good enough.

3 is closer than you normally go and is sharp, but did it really challenge you to do something you would normally not do and still make a good picture. I find the light triangle at the bottom a bit distracting.

2 is close (and maybe too close for comfort) but if you build on this idea try to get a real nice composition where the framing and borders all support the line of the flame and nothing is cut off.

Good luck and I hope you don't find my verdict too harsh. If you do pls. tell me, I can also be very reasonable (at least I think so )

Hi pegelli, you are harsh but that's good.
Id did start with assignment 1 and will try all of them on order.

For picture 2 I have a other one, that I like better but is a little less close.
a

iso 400, 35mm, f5.6, 1/30sec
Picture 3, Without this assignment I would never have made this picture, the grey on the bottom is a later placed balustrade, but yes it is a distraction I could not get around in this picture. So maybe I had to go closer.

Picture 4, I believe this is the best picture for the assignment but I am happy you did not let me pass on it.

and a other try..
For this picture I was glad that the band did know me. because I had to clime on the stage.
b

iso 1600, 24mm, f2.8, 1/60sec
c
I dont like this so much as b but it is more cut out. It breaks most of my rules, not to cut off feet and parts of instruments

iso 1600, 50mm, f.7, 1/30sec

Spook, closer, but not close enough. For both pictures to pass this assignment you would have had to move a lot closer, such that for instance you can see the grime under their fingernails or some other type of close up detail from the scene. These are two nice, but quite conventional, band shots that made a bit too small step out of your comfort zone imo.

oke, closer...

iso400, 18mm, f3.5, 1/6sec

I can't go closer, would not normally make a picture like this, sending co workers away to make a picture from smoked cigarettes is not something I feel comfortable with.
And despite the subject I do like the picture and the composition.

Spook, a royal pass. For me the best picture you have posted in this thread, as you say a nice composition, good use of a diagonal and oof background. Also colors are nice and punchy

thanks

I hope I did not make it to difficult for you
I knew the other pictures would be difficult to pass on, but I did wanted to push my self to the limits of my convert zone, and make pictures that I would not make normally.

and I have to admit that without you I would not have thought about making this picture. But I love the result. Thanks

To the contrary, I enjoy being the judge and like to challenge myself to analyse the pictures people post to see if they meet the rules or not. I try to be pretty strict, so they are a challenge for the participants so they feel good when they pass. If I pass every picture that's close the challenge (and sense of fulfillment) would be much lower I think.

Here's my attempt at getting closer - I hope it satisfies the requirements. Thanks for your comments in advance.

The rules say "you will get closer to one of your frequent subjects. But the reason you didn't get closer before must be that either you are scared or embarrassed in some way, or you haven't thought of going closer to that subject before. You will challenge yourself to get closer to it!"

I am sorry, but I don't see that you have been challenged by getting close to a statue of a dog.

I agree with brettania, can you tell something about this picture, how you took it and what was challenging you taking it. The picture in itself looks like a quite normal close-up.
