Yesterday I decided to scout an MTB (mountainbike) trail somewhere in an urban area where people said have lots of birds species.
My first time to carry the A99 and SAL70400G on a bike! Been planning how to carry them in a hydration backpack (without the bladder). The lens should be detached from the body - more manageable and 'safer' to transport. Ordered an oversized camera-lens pouch (minimal padding to minimize the size made by Rolanpro from Amazon) to protect the lens. The body, I just protected with silicon material for the laptop. The Rolanpro lens pouch is actually big enough for the body+lens - but only if I'm bringing them with a car. They fit snugly inside the hydration backpack (N Nevo Rhino also from Amazon ![]() The MTB trail is near the chapel and a mall. First 3 shots from the iphone13mini: bike and gear ![]() wider to show the 'inverted white lily' inspired' Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel at the background. ![]() from the other side showing the smaller prayer room/ossuary on the left. I plan to bring the KM17-35 next time to shoot these area. ![]() So I first checked the trail and see which area I could possibly spot the birds but thought it was a 'bad'/gloomy day. Saw the usual birds that I wasn't able to shoot because they move so fast ![]() ![]() Then spotted some myenas from afar (heavy crop) ![]() ^Crested Myna(?) Then when I declared it's really a bad day for me and was about to leave the trail, this guy decided to cheer me up ![]() ![]() I think this is a lifer for me - the Collared Kingfisher ![]() I then proceeded to the chapel/mall area and tried to make use of the 70mm end of the lens ![]() The prayer room|ossuary ![]() The chapel ![]() and some extra shots Birdy BD1 ![]() Not sure which tree is this (first time to see it) ![]() Yellow bell(?) ![]() thanks for reaching this line so far ![]() I've already fitted the body and lens with Smallrig's quick release strap (similar to PeakDesign) but didn't bring the shoulder strap since I wasn't really planning to use it while biking but putting the gear in the bag then biking in the area and bringing it out to shoot felt quite inconvenient, I'm checking for a harness that will let me bike with ease and peace of mind e.g. Cotton Carrier, Rille Strap or even the Lens Carrier System - actually a very good idea for a DIY project. Hope to make one soon. TFL! |

Quite nice pictures you have captured, although from the title I expected slightly larger number of bird shots.
I recall I have seen one fellow bird photographer frequently riding around on a bike with a camera and lens hanging on a shoulder strap. I do also frequently do birding moving around on a bicycle, although I'm most often still resorting on the traditional camera backpack approach, which may not be optimal for quick action as sure it takes time to hop off from the bike, take off the backpack and dig out a camera. Although occasionally, I do have included Sony RX10 IV in my kit and carried that on a neck strap, so I'm then having one camera that is always ready to shoot. |

If you did a MTB trail with this bike (with these small wheels) it is an achievement itself. As for the photo's, love the birds. TFS Moises
