    Posted: 30 June 2017 at 09:24
Today I noticed that all my photos that I have linked to DYXUM are no longer available. I use a photobucket free account. In the place of the image there is a logo reading "Please update your account to allow 3rd party hosting! For important info please go to www.photobucket.com/P500".

If you go to "www.photobucket.com/P500" your computer will be infected with cookies of videogames sites. No information at all will be provided at that site. Don't ever go there!

So I tried to find out what has happened: First I thought that I have outrun my storage limit. But I have used only about 20% of the 2 GB of free storage.

Then I saw that photobucket had just changed its terms of use - on June 28, 2017: Image linking and third party hosting for free accounts is no longer supported. These options are now only available for members who subscribe to the Plus500 plan which will cost you $399.99 a year (and which gives you 500 GB storage space).

I have use photobucket now for a couple of years with no problem. And I know that freebies can be risky. But this is an attempt at blackmail IMO.

I apologize - it will take some time for me to reconstruct the links of my photos using a different host service (and it's probable that I won't be able to do this for all my linked photos). I am willing to pay a reasonable fee for it (I have one of the old Flickr pro accounts, but the set of images in that account is a different one, so I won't use that).

I am thankful for any suggestions what to do in such a case - particularly what host service would be recommendable!

Just came back from the Biennale in Venice and wanted to upload and show some images. Sorry, this will have to wait a bit.

aaarrrggghhhhh, horror! and truly sorry!!

(I seem to be the only one here, but-) I love www.myalbum.com
https://myalbum.com/de

a dutch company, (thus easy to get hold of/call them), that went worldwide last year with their new 'story telling' concept.
and started a print service as well.
(they are open to suggestions. I was even invited as a beta tester for the new concept).

up to 2 or 5 gig (or 10??) and up to 5 'albums' it's free.
I pay something in the region of E 47 per year for 100 gig/countless albums, ad-free.
they also offer business accounts that enable people to add logos and create albums without 'myalbum' logo and their 'very own' URLs.

all the pics that I want to share (on Dyxum or elsewhere) are parked there. I also use it for back-ups, in full res.
what I love in particular is that all of my albums remain private, unless I choose to share them. and even then there are multiple options.
for instance, 'here' I unchecked all of the 3rd party options (like share/download/add/order/respond/etc. and even removed my initials).
https://myalbum.com/album/apUFwb769pUF
layout is easy to change.

more samples on the site.

my 2 cents? (for what it's worth!)

good luck!!
and looking FW to see Venice!!

That's terrible Harald, they could at least have given more notice or disabled linking for pictures uploaded after June 28, but left the older ones in place. I'm glad I ditched Photobucket years ago (when they changed their terms and got irrevocable free rights to the pictures uploaded there)

I use SmugMug and am very happy with it. Costs me a little over 50$ per year but in general it's been very reliable and no advertizing, pop-ups or other junk, it's only your own pictures and layout you get to see. Also you retain full ownership of everything you upload there.

If you decide to go this route and use this link: https://secure.smugmug.com/signup?Coupon=qhPNqZdmiZ1oE I will get a discount on my next yearly renewal, but don't feel pressured to use it. Investigate all your options and decide what would work best for you.

Good thinking Fred!

Harald, you probably can't edit these posts anymore (one is locked, the other one is in my voting post). So once you have a new link send it to me by PM and I'll make the repairs for you.

I've been using photobucket for years. I guess it's time for a switch. I moved some of my pictures to joomeo to try it out. I modified my last five posts to link to the new pictures. If this works out, joomeo (the paid version) seems reasonably priced and is pretty easy to use. Are there better alternatives to joomeo? Thanks for any help.

And thanks for the heads up Harald. Although I did receive an email from photobucket (when I checked). It would have been a reasonable thing for photobucket to restore third party linking to their basic paid account, but they are trying to make money, I suppose, by getting people to pay $400 U.S. yearly for the privilege. A little stiff for the non professional who just wants to share images for enjoyment.

So strange! I switched to Smugmug years ago as well but I've got the errant photo on photobucket... and they're still there, no problem. So, what to think??

If they're wanting to make more money, charging 400 bucks a year for the service isn't the way to go about it. I can't see that company surviving for much longer.

I use the free version of Joomeo and it works fine for me, but I don't put a lot of pics on it.
Miranda F & Sensorex, Sony A7Rii, A58, Nex-6, Dynax 4, 5, 60, 500si/600si/700si/800si, various Sony & Minolta lenses, several Tamrons, lots of MF primes and *far* too many old film cameras ...

It's 400$ to upgrade your account? Rough!!

I used photobucket a while ago but went to zenfolio (not free) when I was annoyed at the adds on photobucket.
I think zenfolio plans got more expensive over the years for new users though.

I think that you can use many services for uploading photos, even dropbox & the likes.

Hi Harald,

That's really bad news and seems like a degree of 'making money from menaces' at a corporate level if nothing else.

I have to ask - why don't you continue to use your Flickr account? I am a 'Pro' member and, for what I need to for (and for what they charge per year), it suits me perfectly. However, I also understand that others offer something more than Flickr does so you may end up elsewhere anyway.

The thought of having to go back and re-load and update all my image threads just doesn't bear thinking about to be honest...

Good luck and let us know which decision you make.

Best regards, Neil.

Cats (11) on Page 11.
Here on Dyxum Themed Views under Cats.
I can still see the image here. Just checked my Photobucket Free account, it shows 13% storage used

Pretty much all my stuff is on photobucket... I have a number of free accounts and a paid one I have been using for six years or so... They still seem to be there to me, but I guess that might be due to stuff being in cache.
