G'day All,

The Photography Club that I am a member of has an Old website that has been designed and maintained by one of the long standing members, using a "Frontpage" clone and now that software no longer works (didnt work well when it was working as every new page needed to have the whole website recreated and uploaded everytime).

About 3 years ago I did up a demo website for them with the functionality that they were desiring using Wordpress. I showed a few of the committee members at the time and the then website coordinator and as he had once tried wordpress and managed to break it without knowing what he did to break his test site, he was completely against using it.

Now the tide however has changed. As the old software he was using no longer works and is completely unsupported and full of holes and he no longer wants to maintain the website, the rest of the committee now wants to have the website the way they wanted when he refused to allow the one I had showed them.

Some of the current committee members who were on the committee back then who saw my demo for them at the time, have now been using Wordpress on their own personal websites and now wanting what I had demo'd to them 3 years ago. However, I no longer have that demo and I dont remember what plugin's I used to get the functionality they were wanting. So I've been looking again to see whats being used and what is compatible with the current versions of wordpress.

So hopefully there might be some members here who are part of a camera club that are using wordpress and know what plugins they are using on their site that provides their functionality and if the functionality below is something like what they are using / or considering.

As the club is a Non-profit organisation, any monies that need to be spent of plugins or templates etc would either need to be minimal and would most likely be donated to the club by individual members, such as web hosting and domains etc.

The website is primarily for local residents and anyone who might be visiting the region who might like to attend an evening.

Plugin's considered for the Camera Club

Entry Wizard - havent done a test site as yet
EWZ Rating - havent done a test site as yet
Nextgen Gallery
PBS Security
Calendar Function
Push Email Notifications to members such as cut-off date time reminders

Theme Considered

Either a freebie thats suitable
Photocrati

Functonality Requirements

Individual Member User Login - Wordpress User Accounts (currently there are approximately 35 members)
Photography Club Member Tracking - Member ID as part of their Image Naming and financial members (membership is either annual / bi-annual)
Members Uploading Images that Automatically Resize on Upload according to the image displaying rules for the club
Automatically Add Naming Convention to individual Images for Monthly Competitions (EG: Member ID, Grade, Set / Open Subjects, Image Title)
Remote Judging of Images for Competition entries (Judge logs-in and judges all entries for that competition) - option for Critique on each image
Option for Popular Image Competition - Internet based without grades or photographer names
Image Entries open date / cut-off date / time, outside those criteria entries rejected even if the meber brings them on the club night for the competition
All images uploaded are presorted into directories ready for downloading according to Competition - Month - Grade - Set Subject / Open
All images uploaded has a report of images and a spreadsheet / csv file of all entries for that months competition

Galleries for past competition entries - Nextgen Galleries
Newsletters etc - Pages edited by members who are proficient at desktop publishing

Had considered a forum function, however, there has been more than enough bickering by some members on social media (apparently), my recommendation would be that a forum would be just one more location of headaches and for some members to have another soapbox to whinge on.

So if you have any recommendations / suggestions that would be helpful, please throw in your 2 cents worth.

Regards,
Craig

Hi Craig,

my 2 eurocents...

I've several websites using Wordpress. Since a year or so my hosting provider (one.com) has a 'one click Wordpress' option, meaning that the complete Wordpress installation is really a 'one click' operation, you don't need to install/configure anything yourself. I guess other providers will also have this kind of service.

These are some other plugins I use:
Autoptimize
Antispam Bee: an anti-spam solution is highly recommended
Contact Form 7
Cookie Notice
Google Fonts for WordPress: if you like to use a special font
Newsletter
Really Simple SSL: to get your site on https instead of http; Google Chrome is indicating websites without https/SSL as 'unsafe' and might even block them completely in the future
Subscribe to Comments Reloaded: this is something you should check, if new comments are automatically sent to the people that had previous comments
Wordfence Security: also highly recommended. Even the free version offers good protection.
WP-Optimize
WP Super Cache
Yoast SEO
And you will probably also like some plugin for statistics and one for backups, unless this is included in your hosting plan.

The theme I'm using at this moment on my photo blog is Drape. I have the Pro version and made some minor changes to it.

And also an important note: Wordpress recently upgraded to version 5, which has a new editor, called 'Gutenberg'. I hate it. I'm having a hard time working with it. But, you can go back to the old editor, you need to install the 'Classic Editor' plugin for that. That's what I did.

Regards,

Eddy

G'day Eddy,

Thanks for your reply and your input, really appreciated. I'm sure that others here may find it helpful as well.

I have a few website also running, however, I dont use the onelice solution that is offered in CPanel, because I prefer to have a clean install rather than what a webhost might want to include with their offerings.

I do run my wordpress websites as https: and I do this using the https function in wordpress and forcing the site to run as https via server security by calling the SSL security from the .htaccess files.

Keith_H from Brisbane also mentioned to me about wordfence, but Ive had really good success from BPS and it allows me to option to create a secure .htaccess file that calls all the server security functions and also a few other functions that are customised by BPS.

I also use the Contact Form which is provided by Yoast (if I remember correctly)

One of my websites was behaving very oddly sometime back and it was WP Supercache causing my website to issue some sort of cached file to the viewer, but after dumping WP Supercache and removing all its extra setup functions for the.htaccess files, the site is running just as fast without it as it did for quite some time with it.

I do have the WP-Optimize plugin however, I dont have it active at this stage.

I have a couple other plugin's that I use on my sites that track visitors and their IP Address and a log is created in BPS if that visitor happens to try to bruteforce entry etc.

I also have a couple plugins that is supposed to copyprotect images, though that doesnt actually prevent the user from seeing that actual image path and so far I've never found a way of forcing the browser not to display the image path.

I did find quite some time ago a plugin that uses a transparent image overlay that the browser sees and that transparent file then goes and retrieves the actual image and hides the actual image path and any visitor would only see the transparentcy path. But I cant remember what it was called to set that one up for testing and forther image security.

Yes I found that wordpress is using the Gutenberg editor now and it drives me up the wall. But I've looked at a couple front editors that would allow authorised authors on the camera club website to use to have far better editing functionality. In a couple of my pages the Default Gutenberg editor shows as the old editor and then on other pages it shows as the new editor even though all the pages are basically the same age.

I suppose that if I was editing pages on a phone or tablet it would be acceptable, however, I only edit from my desktop monitor 2560 x 1440 resolution and I only get a phone sized page to edit on and I have all this extra white space around the admin area that is basically useless. The old page editor worked far better in my books.

I did try the old classic editor install, however, I found that it had a few bugs and it was in conflict with something in WP 5 and even on a clean install test site without anything else added it would just hang the site until I deleted it. Maybe they will get things sorted with the latest WP update that installed last week.

I found that using the WEBEditor from firefox helped me to identify what may have been displaying as part non secured SSL on my site and it turned out to be that favicon image that shows in the browser tab, although it is secured, it was being called from the header.php as http and once I changed the code to force it to https, problem solved, it took me only a few minuted to find and fix.

Anyway, thank you again for your input.

Regards,
Craig

Based upon your answer, I think you know a lot more about WordPress than I do...

My knowledge stops at finding the right plugins and making really minor changes in a css or php files.

G'day John,

Yes, sorry to hear about the flooding down where you are, both Lismore and Casino having been hit hard and many people made homeless overnight basically.

For the time being, my wife and I live in Bundaberg (Moore Park Beach), but this is my first visit back to Dyxum since July 2020. We have been living in a tent until 3 weeks ago when our house was finally finished being built and we have lightly moved in, with just what we were camping with. Because we are now having to move to far north Qld for work, as soon as we find somewhere to live. We dont want to do another 20months in a tent.

Well long story short, the club member who has been doing the club website for 10years still insists on doing the website his own way, using very old software that has been unsupported now for at least 8 years to my knowledge using ancient web language.

So the club website still remains undeveloped but he redoes the website after each competition night and the software he uses is like the old Microsoft competitor to Dreamweaver based in 2002.

I looked at the Wordpress plugins for Photography Clubs and I did do a demo website again in Aug 2020, while I was able to have access to power to run my old laptop. But the club committee members decided after to continue to let the club member do the web development. However, he is now having health issues and is in his 80's and he is the only one who has all the website details, such as host, registrar, login details etc. So I can see that if his health deteriorates any further, they will be in a big mess. And I wont be around to help them solve their problem.

Anyway, sorry for not being of any help with your website dilemma.

Regards,
Craig
