Where is the best place to post photos so they can be displayed in these forums?

Hi Shearwater!

Not sure if it's been done elsewhere, but WELCOME to Dyxum! It's a great community and many fine photographers, pro & "amateur" alike, populate the registry.

Honestly, i don't post alot of photos here. However, i really like the interface i have using flickr. It's pretty straight-forward to upload images and i think the links work pretty well.

And for me, the *best* aspect of flickr is it's FREE.

Also a warm welcome from me.

There's 5 pages dedicated to this topic over here.

I personally use SmugMug, it's not free but for me the added security and complete absence of any pop-ups etc. makes it worth my while.
You can see the April Foolishness 2023 exhibition here Another great show of the talent we have on Dyxum

I hear that, and correct me if I'm wrong, you can only host a certain number of pics with Flickr. Link more than that number, and the first ones will start to dissapear. Might not be an issue, depending on ow many pics you want to post.

I used Photobucket for a while. like Flickr, it's free and has some limitations... you can't post full-resolution images (limited to 1mb/image), and the ads got on my nerves.

I used flickr for a year, then gave up and switched to smugmug. Thing with flickr is you can only upload so many with a free account and then if you buy pro most of your images will disappear after the subscription expires. There are lots of good things with smugmug, it's by far perfect, but it aint bad for what it does. My smugmug is in my signature.

You have two choices with Flickr, a free account and a 'Pro' account that costs 20 dollars a year. The free account limits you to 200 total images and only so many uploads per month, like 20 or maybe 30 and there is a file size in MB limit on uploads. With the paid account there are no restrictions whatsoever.

Edit: if your paid account on Flickr expires it will revert to the free limits, but once you renew your subscription everything is restored and nothing is lost if you do so in a timely manner.

As several other forum members have mentioned SmugMug is an excellent choice. True, you pay from $40 to $150 per year but even at the $40 level you have many options for making your photos look the best. No ads, unlimited storage, customizable look and feel, amazing customer service. All well worth annual price. At the pro and power levels, if you are willing to invest the time, you can customize the interface where anybody visiting your galleries will not even be aware you are not hosting your own site (take a look at the galleries ricardovaste, for example). There are several full time pro photographers that I shoot with that host their entire collections on SmugMug.
You could also take a look at Zenfolio for a good pay site.

If you just want to share images (not sell them), a free Picasa account is just fine. These are the various storage options:

1GB - Free
20GB - $5/yr
80GB - $20/yr
200GB - $50/yr
400GB - $100/yr
1TB - $256/yr
2TB - $512/yr
4TB - $1024/yr
8TB - $2048/yr
16TB - $4096/yr

Albums can be public or private. All of my albums are private at the moment, so only people who know the exact URL can view them. However, I can link to individual photos in any album at any time, like this...

The Picasa program itself is also quite nice.

For simply hosting images for your blog or web galleries for friends and family, "Flickr" is the best choice because it has benefits that the others don't.

1. Flickr is a community so an audience of members will be able to comment and view your images. You can join groups and submit images to contests and etc...

2. If you choose, Flickr is a great place to generate traffic for your main website. In your profile and image posts you can refer back to your main website.

Smugmug is really designed to run your photography business and not just host images. It is much more suitable to be your main website or a part of your main website. Other choices include.

- Photoshelter: Allows you to do everything smugmug.com and allows you to license your work (i.e stock) and can be customized to look exactly like your main website or integrated into a wordpress blog. By far the most professional look of the 3. Expensive compared to the rest.

- Zenfolio: Similar to smugmug but much simpler to use and the presentation IMO looks more professional.

- Smugmug: Excellent all around but the features implemented don't seem well thought out and presentation feels sort of amateurish.

Whatever you choose, make sure you read the small print. Many photo sharing sites make unreasonable claims on the copyright of any images you post. e.g. you grant them rights to use your images in any way they like.

You can post them on Google (photos) for free, very easily and it works for me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you have a free Flickr account, don't you only get to view low-res versions of photos?

I like Picasa a lot, and the photo organizing/uploading program is nice. It's much easier to get a number of pictures up to picasa than it is to get them onto flickr.

I use Flickr, and photobucket depending on the photos I'm uploading. If its usually none edited junk it goes on photobucket. For pictures I wanna share and like, I use Flickr. They all have their upsides as well as their downsides, Flickr for me even with the limited amount of photos is still useful, I might even upgrade to pro next year.
