I was thinking of buying a CPL for my 24-70 GM II. It has 82mm thread.
Do you have any recommendations? I was asking in a shop and they recommended Marumi Super or Exus but in online reviews I could not see anything that would make me want anything more than other.
Quality goes first, light transmission is important but not at the cost of polarizing effect. It should also be slim but I guess all of them are.
So far I have been using a Zeiss T* one for the SSM version.

Don’t go cheap, look at B&H, Hoya HD3 or NXT, Sony’s own T* filters or the CZ versions.

Marumi's are well regarded. problem with filters is it is hard to find good reviews, especially comparing them. So, you have to go by name and little pieces of information.

I don't intend to go cheap, but I also really don't know which one to choose.
There are the likes of:
Hoya HD Nano Mk II CIR-PL
Marumi DHG Super Circular PL
Marumi Exus CPL
LEE Elements Circular Polarizer
Sony VF-82CPAM2
CARL ZEISS CPL T* 82MM
B+W 82mm POL-CIR MRC KSM SLIM

Heliopan is supposed to be the same as Zeiss but with different branding.

The more I read, the less I know...

Yes, very little... Also descriptions are basically the same for all of them. I guess this is going to be a random buy. Even when I look at some comparisons, it is hard to tell which is better as people only focus on the effect as seen on a very small picture. And I want not to lose quality of the lens. And that lens already has its own problems, I don't want to add even more ;)

So far I have experience with B+W, Hoya, Heliopan, Kenko Zeta and Marumi CPL filters. I have the 82mm Marumi Exus CPL for my 24-105 Sigma Art lens - and this is an absolutely perfect solution for me. But all of the aforementioned filter makers provide very good CPLs in the higher price segment (like Hoya HD or B+W XS Pro) - these are multi-coated filters and they may even have a nano coating to prevent dirt from resting on the glass.

But these filter makers do not create the "gold standard". This is certainly Singh-Ray with its huge offering of filters in general, CPLs in particular. They are ridiculously expensive. Some maker which recently has come close to the gold standard is Breakthrough with its X4 CPL filters. They have gone to great lengths to avoid a certain color cast (due to the materials used in the filters) which is typical for CPLs. They are not as expensive as Singh-Ray but cost at least twice the price of a decent B+W or Marumi CPL. I don't have one, but all what I have been reading about them tells me they are worth it.

Thank you. And from your experience was there any difference between those filters? Exus on par with the others? Maybe one is better than the others?

One of the really critical applications is their use on wide angle and UWA lenses - i.e. focal lengths (24mm and less). My impression was that the Exus in that situation behaved better than other (older) CPL filters I have; it is one of the most recent designs. Disclaimer: This is a highly subjective verdict. It may well be that the newest designs by Hoya or B+W can match this performance easily. The B+W now is in the range of Singh-Ray filters, at least price-wise. The Exus might be one of the most affordable CPLs as well.

Does any company actually make a "cheap" 82mm polarizer filter?

For that matter, does any company make any cheap 82mm filters of any type?

Just curious, because I've never seen them. Once passed 77mm, the bargain filters seem to disappear.

There is the Hoya UX II series of filters which includes CPL filters. Hoya's basic filter line offers solid, very well working filters - certainly an option for those who don't want to spend too much on filters.

Cheap: "costing little money or less than is usual or expected" (Cambridge dictionary) - 20 bucks for an 82mm filter is cheap.
