The first for me. the hair light would have spoiled the low key edgy vibe.

Both shots aren't bad and show potential. But the second, while the model is clearer visible, has too much exposure. The first has a touch of magic, but is too dark. So 'd suggest up the exposure a little and see what comes out.

I do not know what your subjects skin colour is and how important that is to your picture - but there is a huge difference in perceives skin colour between the two pictures. Like Michel I feel that the second on is too bright, too flat looking, whereas you rightly consider the first one too dark.
Somewhere in the middle, where you start to notice the hair line, probably is best. So, yes, up the exposure a little on the first one and see what comes out. |

Let me start by saying I am certainly not experienced or an expert on portraits. I agree with some previous comments that I like the first best. What bothers me a bit is the glowing skin eg. at the point of his nose. I once did a portrait workshop with a profesionnal pghotographer, where the participants had to be the model too by turn. Haven't been able to practice it much further since. However, first trick we learned wasn't about photography itself, but to use the powder brush  .

Lee, glad you like the 1st one as-is.
Michele, agree that the low key is a tad dark. I can't get around the fact that the dark hair is disappearing into the background. I do want to see that separation. The second one is a bit brighter than it should be, you're right. That brings me to your comments, Addy. His skin color is olive/swarthy. Hence the 2nd one is definitely bright. 1st one is darker than it should be - so wondering how to get a low key effect while being true to skin tones. I see too many high/low key shots online where the shot itself is merely over/under exposed. Gotta improve my skill. |

Hi Ken,
I like the B&W version as it evokes a feeling of bygone film stars. However, the shadow across the left eye is a distraction. The shadow is not so prominent in the color version, but it does not have the "film noir" appeal of the B&W. My vote is for the B&W, but think the lighting could be more effective. TFS... Brian |
