andijs; Thanks for sharing this very enjoyable series! The matching of model and setting is very compelling.
#1 and #3 are very similar so I'll start by comparing them. I think #3 works better for at least 2 reasons. First, the exposure and colors are better. #1 looks a bit over exposed, resulting in washed out skin tones and lack of vibrancy in the colors. By comparison #3 looks more realistic and has richer colors. Secondly, I prefer #3 because of the composition. In #1 the model's head is dead center, there is empty space on the left side, and her feet are cut off on the right side. In #3 the model's head is nicely off-center, her feet aren't cut off, and the empty space on far left and far right are about the same, giving the whole frame a very well balanced feel. I would even consider going just a bit tighter on #3, cropping a bit of sand from the bottom. Your model has a very nice smile, which is evident in both pictures, and I do like the idea of #1 having her actually looking into the viewfinder. I only wish my models (wife and kids) were half as cooperative!

#2 is a very striking photo with wonderful lighting! Your model's expression is also very fitting. I like this picture very much. I might be tempted to crop a bit to one side or the other, and the dark orange line in the upper right suggest that some rotation might be in order, but it's hard to tell for sure.

Keep up the great work and keep sharing with us!

josj; ahh, toddler photos are so much fun! Take lots!
This guy looks pretty comfortable in front of the camera, which is a great thing for the photographer-parent!

I'm not sure what your settings were for this one, but it appears that the point of focus is a bit in front of his eyes. The nose and bottom lip appear quite sharp and the fabric on his shirt near the letter "e" appears very sharp. It's hard to get the eyes sharp, but when they are the whole photo really pops. I would recommend center spot AF, put one of his eyes right in the center of your viewfinder, and frame a bit wider so you have room to crop later and get the exact composition you want. Then fire off multiple frames in AF-C or AF-A. Finally, on the computer zoom in to 100% and look at the eye. It's not unusual for some shots to be exactly spot on and others to be just a bit off.

Thanks for sharing and enjoy life with the little guy!

I think it is time for the next poster with a new shot to start Pure portraits IV, but I will leave this thread open in case there are any further responses to Jim's excellent comments.

I'd slice off the bottom of the rock, the OOF glare is distracting, and maybe trim some of the top too. Otherwise it's a lovely portrait.
