What kind of pricing decisions do you make when someone (out of the blue) asks for rights to use photos for advertising purposes?
Normally I just sell prints or release stuff at a nominal cost for educational use. I don't want to seriously undercut people who do this for a living, but some idea of what a fair price is would be appreciated. |

I've never been approached on the basis of anything commercial for advertising, and hopefully there are members here with that experience who might be able to advise.
Like you I've mainly allowed images to be used for educational purposes where the fee has been nominal or even free, with attribution. When I was once asked if I would licence an image for publication as a cover photo for a limited circulation classical music magazine, the publisher had a standard release and fee structure that I was asked to consider and then agree to, which I did. I would imagine that whoever has approached you might have something similar? The fee could vary enormously depending on the intended use of your image, the product it is promoting, the circulation etc. Good luck with it all. |

@Jozioau - thanks, I’ve asked about the circulation and format of the intended use, and whether it is a one-off deal or an image they wish to use over time.

It all depends on how and where they will use it, how many times, number of copies, media, etc
And if they want all the rights on the photo. That way that photo cannot be sold or used by anyone else. |

Yup, I've got a pretty good handle on the variables. It's the ballpark prices I'm unsure what to pitch at |
