Since my psychologist niece asked me one time why I was writing down the location of a lone tree in an open field we were passing by while driving I have collected quotes about or that can be related to photography because of what she said to me after I answered: "All photographs are self-portraits." Authored by Minor White, quite the photographer by the way. From time to time I will post some quotations here until I exhaust my collection (it's in the hundreds by the way and I am always adding to it). The vast majority of the quotations come from highly accomplished photographers, in many cases legends of the genre. Enjoy, comment, disagree (but don't shoot the messenger!), agree, enjoy some more.

1. "There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs". Ansel Adams

2. "I crop for the benefit of the pictures. The world just does not fit conveniently into the format of a 35mm camera." W. Eugene Smith

3. "The two most engaging things about a photograph are to make new things familiar and familiar things new." William Thackeray

4. "A technically perfect photograph can be the world's most boring picture." Andreas Feininger

5. "Show something in a way so that people feel they are seeing it for the first time." Harold Feinstein (Upon hearing this many years ago it has guided almost all my shooting, especially when photographing iconic subjects).

6. "Sharpness is overrated." Keith Carter

7. "Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will get you everywhere." Albert Einsein

8. "Never say you're going back - shoot it now." Jay Maisel

9. "A camera merely records, but an artist creates." Chuck Kimmerlee

10. "The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera." Dorothea Lange

Although with the modern digital cameras that may take up to 30 frames/second, I think that 10000 photos mark comes way sooner than in the earlier times...

Quite the memory you have - I had forgotten.   However, this time I will add to this initial group from time to time. Interesting that in both lists Mr. Adams' statement about rules was first.

The memory thing, probably due to our relative ages - Happy Birthday! You're a youngster (I'm 77).

I'd rather not. I Prefer to keep this "clean" with at least once a week update by me adding to the quotations above.

21. I wholeheartedly disagree with the Edward Weston quote.
25. Oscar Wilde was a novelist - great quote, but how does it relate to photography?

HCB always makes so much sense. His best: “Of course it’s all luck.”

Weston quote might be more acceptable and accurate if it read "visual" art which is what he meant I believe.

Oscar Wilde quote has everything to do with photography an art to me in this way - be yourself, don't imitate others, be inspired by them but do not imitate.

Like poetry, quotations like this are subject to interpretation. We bring our own experiences and values with us and, therefore, we interpret song lyrics, novels, quotations, etc. differently.
