Hello Pieter. Thank you for the compliment. One of my reasons for joining this wonderful forum is to broaden my photography, and hopefully improve my skills. Up to now I have been too transport focused, especially trains.

I am not presently an active fireman. My rules exam is overdue and until I take it I can't fire. I have fired (from memory, I think) six black fives. I've fired most of the preserved ex LMS and BR types of locomotives with the exception of a Royal Scot. Other notable types include the newly built LNER A1 class locomotive Tornado, Southern Railway pacific City of Wells and the A4 Union of South Africa. I haven't done any UK mainline work though. I have visited Poland where I fired and drove on the main line for a week. Mainly the OL class locomotives although one day we had the pacific PM class. Don't knock the smaller locomotives. They need more skill to fire than the bigger ones. Some of my best days out have been on an LMS 0-6-0 shunter, known as Jinties in the UK. On one occasion we ran four miles non-stop with a train of 205 tons at 40 kph (A large load for a small locomotive). It was memorable. As this is a picture forum I'll stop writing now! Happy to discuss my railway experiences if any enthusiasts want to get in touch.

Joseph, congrats on your 2000th and rest assured, your pictures look fine on my computer screen. Great catches all of them and you did fine given the very difficult light

Ian, I just went through your Flickr photostream and wow, you're a real railway (and public transport) enthusiast, highly recommended to have a look for all the railway fans here. these above photos look fine on my Mac and on my flicker or I wouldn't have posted them
here on Dyxum they look distorted and horrible, just look at the clouds

Good Lord everyone is posting so many great photos here I can't keep up with all of them. Wonderful! Thank you all for posting them. Hard to pick favorites, but Pieter driving Hanomag #4 is just classic! As are his other more recent photos. And a wonderful view of Beekbergen by Fred! Great photos by Joe! Love "Ah hear that train a comin" Super cloud formations and what a vista!
Ken love the Pike's Peak photo! And I want to ride it some day. Visited the base station a couple year ago and saw the train departing. Didn't have time ride that day. My brother has. Wish they still ran steam! Did you have trouble breathing at that altitude?
Great photos by Ian as well! And more nice ones from Joe!

I'm coming up on my 2000th Dyxum post, So I hope you guys don't mind but I'd like it to be this.
When I go out on a trip, I don't usually make plans, just go, do what I want, and see what happens

The locomotive works where many gronks and hippels were built was demolished many years ago. I have more pictures of them on my Flickr photostream for those interested. The houses in Vulcan village, Newton-le-Willows built for the employees still survive and here is the terracotta insignia on the end of one of the houses. I agree it's a very small world and full of coincidences.

Here's another gronk for you then, slightly newer but also built in 1956 (my YOB, you're actually 364 days older than I am) by English Electric.

In the Netherlands their nickname was "hippel", and I have no idea where that comes from either.

I'm a bit late responding to this post. Sorry. 636 was built one year after I was born, and constructed about 3 miles from where I live presently. I'm also qualified and authorised to drive that type of locomotive, which in the UK are classed as 08 (or 09 for the locomotives with different gearing). The enthusiasts have nicknamed them gronks. I don't know the origin of the nickname. I'm a steam fireman!

I've actually done both! Thats driving over the Sierra Nevada's, cross the Great Basin Desert and then climbing the Rocky Mountains,

That sounds a bit like what I did for my daughter's sports career, although my car isn't purple

Thanks Joe, sweet memories from that hobby, but you never lose the railway bug after having done something like that.


I go back periodically to see how they're doing.

Here's a photo from 2009 with SS 657 "The Frog" pulling out of the station in Bad Boekelo


A700 + Sony 18-250

After a major overhaul the engine is now painted in darker green and renumbered NS 8107 to reflect how it looked after the two largest private raiway companies (HSM and SS) merged and became NS. I still need to go and check it out, but COVID makes that difficult at the moment.
