Let's take a look at a real small girl (after the big boy bonanza )

Museum Buurtspoorweg Haaksbergen, engine #2. The only preserved steam locomotive in the Netherlands with a vertical boiler

Sony A850 + Minolta 17-35D

Sony NEX6 + E20/2.8

Btw, I think both Dena's as well as Kelly's shots on the previous page are outstanding, no distractions and a real sense of scale

That's a really cool steam engine, Pieter. Is it operational? You have many railroad gems in the Netherlands! Does Belgium also have many steam engines?
Thanks for sharing! And thanks for the compliment on my photo!

Kind regards,

Kelly

Thanks, Dena! I didn't have to worry about a tripod, there was no room for one with the other photogs! Also the A7III's built in IBIS is very effective and shooting at 1/500 or faster helps as well. Where I find a tripod helpful is keeping the image framed the way I envision the photo. When I'm by myself and waiting for trains I'll sometimes set up a tripod get everything set -- focus point, metering etc and connect my shutter release.

Thanks Kelly, and yes this little gem is in operation. It can't go very fast (25-30 km/hr) but it's still quite powerful as a shunter and can take short trains on the line between Haaksbergen and Boekelo and keep the normal schedule. I helped with the first restoration in the early 1980's and drove it several times when I was still a driver there (until 1992). It got a second overhaul in the mid 2000's.

There's also a few museum lines in Belgium but I haven't taken the time yet to check them out, but it's on my "to do" list.

This thread made me think of a steam engine on display in my hometown. It's in a place I don't really come by often so I was pretty disappointed to learn that they put it behind walls, it used to stand in the open (and nicer to photograph). I guess we just can't have nice things.

This engine was once running a short train line between Regensburg and nearby Donaustauf where a hall of fame - the Walhalla - is located.

On the other hand, the shelter obviously helps to preserve the engine in better shape. For example, this is what museum engine "Ruuhvelti" (Tk3 853) at Kouvola railway station looked few years ago:

I think it was only this year after several years of exposure for the elements of nature and less active maintenance that engine got once again some love and new paint etc. I think there was even a threat it would be removed from its familiar place next to the railway station as the city didn't seem to have enough money to maintain it, luckily some volunteers stepped in and now there has been some talk to build a (glass) shelter that should preserve it with far less maintenance.

^ Yeah, I guess that's true, the roof probably helps a lot with keeping it in a nice condition.

Great photos everyone! Love the Golden Hour light Matheieu! Nice night shot Pieter! You certainly have traveled the world! I wonder about the history of that locomotive.
Very colorful Christmas train Lee. Looks like the event attracted a lot of fans. Cucoo, its interesting that they put plexiglass (whatever that is) around the locomotive. Better than chain link fencing though, which is what they might do here. Heikki, a shame that that engine is out in the open rusting away! Like the balloon smokestack!

Kind regards,

Kelly

Thanks Kelly, there was a little sign in Chinese which might have covered the background, but since I can't read Mandarin it was of no avail to me. I had to travel a lot when I was still working, but only to the places where my employer had sites. So in China I've only been to Shanghai and in India only to Bangalore, from where I shot the following "memorial" locomotive. It's right in front of the San Engineering and Locomotive company on IPTL main road who is still building modern diesels today. It was right across from the hotel where I usually stayed but I only had time once to go out there and take some shots before it got dark. Usually my days were quite long while travelling

You should read my previous message better, after some maintenance earlier this year it is now in much better condition as this picture from this summer proves:
