Great Shot, Joe! I can tell this was in earlier in the day with the sun coming from the east. I was there in the afternoon both Friday and Saturday and it was difficult to get a shot that was not backlit. Perhaps not quite as many people (Foamers as Mathieu said ). Did you wander around the Festival area on 25th street? How about 844's sister Locomotive 833? She stood in Pioneer Park, Salt Lake City for many years before being moved to the Museum area of Union Station.

Regards,

Kelly

UP 4014 @ Union Staion Ogden, Utah 10 May 2019

This photo is in contrast to Joe's photo. Joe had much better morning light from the east, whereas in this photo the light is coming from the south west and is harsh. Also notice what a wide angle lens does. Everything looks longer and wider! And by this time of the day, the crowd had thinned out a little, though there was still a long line to view the cab.

Long Tall Big Boy!

Even at 16mm it is difficult to fit Big Boy into the frame, unless you are at a steep angle or far away. And what a shame kids these days are so poor they can't afford a descent, new pair of blue jeans!    Also notice the platform set up to allow fans to view the cab. The waiting line (Queue) extended way down towards the Station entrance.

UP 6884 in Echo Canyon 10 May 2019
So from Odgen I took a little Detour home via Echo Canyon. 5 locomotives pulling this double stack.

All great shots, Kelly
The one shot I didn't get is that stand alone. Maybe the best shot of all. I wasn't there that day.

As I wrote you, after I decided to combine my CanyonLands trip w Big Boy, I knew you lived there and the last thing I wanted to do is interfere or disrupt your plans. Now that I find out we were there at the same time. Not contacting you is a decision I deeply regret.
We could have had a little Dyxum mini meet, talked shop, took photographs and reveled being in the presences of a once in a lifetime, Big Boy rebirth!

I got there from Wendover before 10am Saturday, hence the deep blue sky's. Actually didn't know if because of the crowds or traffic I would even get to see the engine. With no breakfast, got hungry and went to the street fair for lunch at this Barbecue and Blues joint, I really enjoyed. It felt like the real deal in all place, Ogden!
Went back and photographed w my ultra wide for the afternoon.
Kelly, just think we may have bumped into eachother at some time 🤷‍♂️

Sunday morning got up early to photo the 8am Big Boy departure out of the station
That worked really well. No street closures, no crowds, just handsfull of train nuts like me. Got the whole thing as good as possible. Ran into the same problem you had; 16mm was not wide enough.
I marveled and then was grateful how lucky I was. By the afternoon I was in Moab
I have to say, the rest of the 3000 mile trip went as well. Although at Mono Lake it snowed on me some

Thanks, Joe!

Nice shots of 833 and 25th street with Union Station.

Notice that the outer sheet metal that covered the boiler has been removed. I suspect they did this to remove asbestos insulation. Don't know why they didn't replace the sheet metal. Perhaps it was used as spare parts for 844? I think it was still in place when the Locomotive was on display in Salt Lake City's Pioneer Park.

25th street was a rough place back in the day, kind of replaced "Hell on Wheels". Ogden was a Railroad Town. The rail yards were huge. Not so much anymore.

When in Wendover did you visit the Lee's Liquor Store? It was just down the road from where you took your selfie. I always say, the only reason Wendover exists is because of Utah. Just a short drive for Salt Lake residents. Of course NNRY is about 1 and 1/2 hours south of Wendover.

It would have been fun to meet you in Odgen for a little mini Dyxum meet. Maybe next time? Friday I was there with my wife and a visitor from German,(We met Abe Lincoln who in Union States) but Saturday I was up there by myself. Must have been about 1 or 2 pm, not sure. The sun was very high and the light was harsh.

Kind regards,

Kelly
