Hello Kelly,
The # on this Santa Fe is 347C. It was 347C when I photographed it in the restoration shop in 2010 Your photo does look like primer. As far as I know the museum has 2 other "f" diesels , a Southern Pacific and a Western Pacific. I would take a wild guess that is an SP #. A Western Pacific # I have seen is 805A Howard S, The Flying Scotsman is one of the most legendary engines in the world. Happy Anniversary to this event A nice side on shot would be enjoyable All the Best_______Joseph ![]() |

Beautiful photos of the Flying Scotsman, Howard! Thanks for sharing! I'm always envious of all the active steam trains you have in the UK! ![]() Kind regards, Kelly |

Hi Joe,
I did a search and it seems that it was indeed a Southern Pacific F7 in the Information I found was correct. Kelly |

This photo might be the most important train photo I have
I was coming early Sunday morning to photograph the Big Boy's departure from the train station. This was my 1st view of it! I caught my breath and started running towards it, I couldn't believe what I was seeing I would have been happy to see any Big Boy, only 25 were ever built, (the largest steam engine in the world) only 8 remain. To see this, a living breathing one was way beyond my wildest dream Thank you Union Pacific for getting one of the 8 remaining and take the time and expertise to restoring it The folks you see was basically the whole crowd that was there, considering the prior days crowds, I couldn't believe that either. The weather was as good as it could be. it was pure magic!🎩 ![]() Nostalgia This next pic left me in a quandary. I couldn't figure out if I should leave the photographers shadows in or not. I couldn't tell if it added more to the photo or detracted. I felt both happened and that some will think the one and some the other. So I left the shadows in, but the photo is of the train ![]() ![]() by /photos/purple-bullet/Coast photos taken w Sony a6500, Zeiss 16-70 thanks for viewing |

I think that leaving the shadows in was a good move, they add context and act as a subtle lead in. A super shot, love all the steam!

I agree. It's just a pity that all the steam hides the unique wheel arrangement!

Bigsi,
Thanks for the wonderful, but totally undeserved compliment I think your absolutely right about context. I don't mind people or other objects if they help complete the narrative the photographer is seeking. About all the steam and everything. I thought of calling it "Rolling Thunder, full steam ahead". It was a joyous ruckus ![]() thanks, all the best______Coast |

btw, I don't know of any 4104 engine ? but you are right, the most difficult thing was capturing the unique wheel configuration, usually the wheels and the people standing in front of them were the same height and the people were always there. Then there was a lot of steam from the engine obscuring their view. It was still a thrilling "Rolling Thunder" moment. Audio Doc has the best picture, its his stand alone shot, I believe on its 1st day. I was still driving across Nevada. He also has some good wheel shots of 4014 pulling up the grade on its way back to Cheyenne. thanks_____Coast |

I'm not really much of a train buff, but I headed out today as "the Cornishman", a Tornado class, made a trip from Bristol down to Par. The light could have more interesting and more steam would have been great but I was pretty happy with the shot below. In the background is Plymouth's Devonport dockyard.

Thanks, Kelly, for your kind words, and I guess bigsi's photo shows another aspect of this world.
Coast, I wasn't in a location to see the Flying Scotsman side on. A friend of mine was further down the line on the 175th birthday event and caught the Flying Scotsman and Clun Castle passing each other. Forgive the intrusion of non-Sony/Minolta gear but here are a couple of his photos ![]() Flying Scotsman passing 7029 Clun Castle by Bruce Clarke, on Flickr ![]() Flying Scotsman by Bruce Clarke, on Flickr |
