I'll provide a couple links below, but we have a 'display' locomotive on Rich Mountain in Arkansas. It has stairs so people can climb up and look inside. I stay at the park campground occasionally and wanted to make a unique photo of the locomotive, but it's not so easy with all the stairs and signs around it. Then one evening while out photographing other things, this sunset appeared and I was in the right place. This is with Minolta 100mm macro D. With a little imagination, almost like it's chugging along.

There is no rail line on Rich Mountain except a child's train that runs around the park. There are lines at the base of the mountain and played a big part in the area development, though it's still very rural. A couple articles about the locomotive and park you might find interesting.

My photo.

So this week, the park bought postcards from me to sell at the lodge.

I was in El Portal (CA) where I found this locomotive

It was used (a century ago) to transport timber in the Yosemite area.
What I found interesting is the powertrain, deviating from what I normally see
All wheels are powered and the drive shaft is powered by a three-cillinder RR motor, running on steam.

Driveshaft

Engine

I found more about the train/track here and here

Very nice photos, Domien! That is a "Shay" locomotive. They were designed and used mostly by the logging industry: https://www.shaylocomotives.com/ Thank you for the links and for sharing these great photos!
Looks like you had a very nice vacation in Western USA with many photo opportunities!
Regards,
Kelly

Nicely photographed, Domien, but that is a spectacularly ugly machine!

Thanks, Kelly. It was fun and I brought over 2.500 photos with me.
I'm sorting them out now.
Thx for the link

I must agree here. Luckily they were only used locally, but with a British RR engine. So you are partly to blame.

That surprised me, I didn't know Rolls Royce had any involvement with steam.

Both documentation and signs said it was an RR motor
Maybe there is another organization with this abbreviation.
