West;
Great pictures. The cut out engine is impressive , not easy to do, shows pride in the work Red wheels. I think Germany has red wheels also. I wonder what the significants of red wheels is. Love seeing old preserved steamers, especially from parts not often seen Nice series Joe |

Thank you Sergei for the additional photos! I did find the engine number here with additional info: Russian locomotive 3y.683-89
Joe, I googled the topic of red wheels on German locomotives and the most common answer was that it made inspection of the wheels for cracks and stress defects easier to detect. If you watch old films or videos you might also see crew tapping on drive train parts with a hammer, another method of detecting defects. |

Probably my favorite Big Boy picture. You ask why this one?
Well it was the 1st time I had seen it living and breathing. Knowing I was going to see it running on its own power! And those were the only people there. Real die hard fanatics, the morning was perfect. It was every train fans dream come true. I'm one, drove all day cross the Bonneville Salt Flats at 6am from San Francisco to Ogden Utah, with a smile on my face the whole time |

Very nice image Joe, and I can totally understand the excitement! It was indeed thrilling to see UP 4014 steaming again. And worth that very long drive from SF to Ogden!
I saw it here in Utah again and got a few photos. Sorry for the delay in posting. Some of them are also at Ogden's Union Station were it was on display on the way back to Cheyenne from Roseville, CA. However, this time fans were not able to get close to it like they did in your photos from 2019. |

Thanks Doc; Yeh, I just got Lucky. Too bad there weren't that many good photo ops. But you have one of the Best pic's of Big Boy. The one that is stationary against the wall, Perfection. I still have it. You weren't alone this year, I followed 4014 on You tube and some of the last places you would think have big crowds did. Couldn't believe the crowd in of all places, Carlin Nevada. Yikes! Joe |

Grand Canyon RR shop tour
One of the fascinating things I heard on the tour was most steam engine work was fabricated in shop and the common technique used was "heat and beat" 🥴 Edited by Coast - 04 September 2024 at 07:23 |

Beautiful, Pieter! The Mosel River Valley makes for great landscape photos, and as we can see here, railroad photos as well!
