Great picture of no. 81, Audiodoc, and I loved the 'safety first' logo with the guy just standing on the cowcatcher with one handhold!
Is he trying to collect a single-line token or just waving at his fans?
I also chuckled at the Ebay purchase! Bet that had some interesting delivery charges!
Miranda F & Sensorex, Sony A7Rii, A58, Nex-6, Dynax 4, 5, 60, 500si/600si/700si/800si, various Sony & Minolta lenses, several Tamrons, lots of MF primes and *far* too many old film cameras ...

Thank you, Anthony!
Indeed, I could not believe that that engine was purchase on Ebay! It is funny! There is no rail line all the way to Ely, Nevada, so I guess it had to have been shipped via trucking! And yeah, had to be expensive. It is absolutely amazing what that museum railroad has accomplished, and especially since they are in the "middle of nowhere" Ely Nevada!
Regards,
Kelly

Great train shots Doc. They look like they belong on a train calendar

I visited the Great Central Railway's steam gala last weekend. This year's theme was British Railways Standards, which comprised 999 locomotives built between 1951 and 1960 following rail nationalisation. These ranged from tank engines to express passenger types, examples of three of the twelve classes were present.

Designer was Robert Riddles, who was Sir William Stanier's deputy at the LMS and are a development of that railway's design ethos. The high running plate aided maintenance, this being seen as more important than aesthetics now that the era of cheap plentiful pre-war labour was over.

65 of the standard class 2 were built between 1953 and 1956 for light duties on secondary lines. he class was intact for only seven years as the decision to accelerate the switch to diesels as well as line closures hastened their demise.

Another one rescued from the scrapyard. These were the least powerful of the standard tender engines. 78019 is hauling the demonstration mineral empties.

172 of the standard class 5 design were built between 1951 and 1957, serious locomotives capable of fast running as well as freight work.

In 1959, twenty of the Southern Region locomotives were named, the names being transferred from SR King Arthur class locos that were then being withdrawn. 73082 Camelot is the only survivor.

The Class 9F was intended for use on fast, heavy freight trains over long distances. It was one of the most powerful steam locomotive types ever constructed in Britain, and successfully performed its intended duties. 92220 was the last steam locomotive to be built by British Railways, being delivered in 1960 and named "Evening Star". Steam was eradicated during 1968 though it was later allowed for private charter trains.

92214 is seen here on a demonstration freight train.

Beautiful photos, Alan! I love all of them. Hard to pick a favorite, but if I had to, I'd chose the last one. The portrait of the Engineer (driver?) or Fireman leaning out of the cab! You are so fortunate to have so many live steam photo ops there in the UK!
Regards,
Kelly
